I learned that tires need to be used. The heat and flexing help to release UV protectant compounds that otherwise wash and wear off the surface. At least that was the explanation I got from a tire expert. I learned about this when I had to replace a 5 year old spare that had never been used. Although the tire was unused it had lots of cracks in the sidewall. This was no cheap tire, but a top of the line Michelin.
