Ac/DC tv cables

I recently bought a 24 in. tv for my motorhome. It came with a 110 power cord, as well as a 12 volt cord. It has a built-in DVD player, so I don't have to worry about powering an independent DVD player. I don't want to switch cords, depending on the power source, so is it okay if I just keep the 12 volt cord connected? To me, I think it makes sense that when connected to shore power or generator, the converter will convert the 110 AC current to 12 volt and allow me to use the tv, and when operating solely off coach batteries, it would continue working with the same cable. My question is for those of you who have tv's that came with two cables, which one do you use? Thx.

  • I think I should perhaps be more explicit. The two cords I mentioned are two distinct cords. They each plug into the female receptacle in the back of the tv. They are straight cords, meaning that they do not have the so-called brick. Since the tv came with a removeable stand, the 110 power cord can be attached should the user want to use the tv in the home, where 12 volts would not be available, while the 12 volt cord can be used mostly in the motorhome. The only problem I have is that I have to unplug the tv when used in the motorhome because the red light in the front of the tv remains on as long as I have the house batteries connected, or I can also press the disconnect switch.
  • I cut the end of the cord off and hardwired mine into 12vdc permanently. I always have 12vdc but only sometimes have 120vac.
  • For storage purposes or long-term boondocking might not hurt to know the quiescent draw of the appliance whe turned off but plugged-in.
  • I would do exactly as you're suggesting if I had a TV set up that way. Your thinking is sound.

One additional advantage is that you won't lose the DVD playback position or station search memories or other such things when swapping cables. (You might not anyhow, depending on the design of the TV, but you certainly won't when you don't have to disconnect the power.)
  • my first 15" LCD , was that way, 120>12v
i just used 12v, never did use the 120v

you should be safe in doing that
  • I had one of those a long time ago.
Yes, you can just run it on 12V.
  • I have never had a TV set with two cables but I have had several that had the 120vac to 12vdc converters that plug into a 120vac outlet and I have run the on 12vdc in the RV.

Never had a problem, in fact I even have one in the garage workshop I run on 12vdc from a power supply.
  • I would think you could run off the 12v cable regardless of whether you are hooked up to shore power or not. I have a CPAP machine that I run that way. No issues.
