Added tongue weight

I recently replaced my GC batteries with new ones. I removed the 30# propane tanks for easier access. While I had both off, I scaled the tongue weight. Added the 2 new batteries back and 2 full tanks. Weight increase on tongue was 175#.

Many campers fail to consider this weight when looking at brochure weights and thinking they are OK.

  • I have never really worried about tongue weight. I have always looked at drop. If the vehicle drops more than 1.5-2"s I get a WD hitch and set it with about 1/2-3/4" rear drop and front rise.

By the numbers, two full 30-lb LP tanks should weigh 110-lbs, while the batts should weigh 125-lbs, making a 235-pound increase over a bare tongue.

But only if the weight were directly over the coupler. As the weight moves aft, less is borne by the tongue and more by the axle.

Brochure weights are next to meaningless and the sticker weights listed on the side of the trailer will only give you the dry weight of the camper as it sits at the factory. Most trailer manufacturers will include the empty (tare) weight of the propane tanks as they're shipped with the trailer but often not the gas that will eventually be in them nor batteries, both of which are added by the dealer or owner. If you really want to know what your trailer gross tongue weight is as it sits there fully loaded and ready to camp - weigh it. :W

    I agree this is substantial.
