Adding two 6v to two 12v?

Hi All,

We just moved from a 5th wheel toy hauler to a new class A motorhome. I'm not sure if I should do another set of 12's or add 6's in series. In an ideal world I would swap out all to 6v's but that's not an option. What are you thoughts on this?

Thanks,

  • remeber batteries always go to the weakest battery. heck, just replace them all.

6's will fit, I am moving my battery bank to the empty storage compartment next to my stairs (where they are located now). I could probably fit 10 batteries in that compartment if I wanted too, but weight would be a problem. I will add a few vents to the compartment to let gasses out.
  • I have banked a pair of 6s with a pair of 12s in some of my set-ups, with no problems. Main thing is that the 12s and 6s need to be in similar "condition" so one pair does not ruin the other pair if banked for a long period.

If the new MH's 12s are older, IMO consider them to be not right for matching with a new pair of any type of battery. Or you can get a pair of used Interstate Econo Power 12s for half price of new ones, and bank the four until they are all run down, and then buy four new batteries of whichever type you prefer.

In all cases where physically possible, put the load and charging wires across the whole bank of four. Try not to have a "downstream" pair or individual battery.
  • I don't like mixing batteries with different ages, volts or AHs. As Don said, measure carefully before buying.
  • 6Vs are a bit taller. Can you actually fit them in? Does your camping style actually need 6V batteries?
