You are correct in that having the resistive load on there screws up the power factor.
What is power factor
Well if you use the proper hardware you can plot a voltage curve and a current curve (In fact I have done this in a lab) and then you can measure the angle between the two. COSINE. adding the resistive load reduded the angle. and thus increased the cosine. (Power factor = Cosine cosine zero (No difference totally in phase) = 1)
