Anti-Friction Lubricant

What they do Mex is their not exactly built to fail, but they do know about when they'll fail. How they do this is with test mules. They have a robot that repeatly runs all parts of the car till failure. An example is the gas pedal. They use a test mule to repeatly depress it to the point of failure. It might be many thousands or how many times who knows? If it lasts too long, that means they can make it a little cheaper and shave a few pennies off. Sometimes they make serious mistakes. Dodge did this with their ball joints. They kept shaving metal off but got a nasty surprise when the winter salt, from back east, eroded the joints prematurely and the whole wheel would depart the vehicle. The test mule didn't take that into account. The data that the test mules generate is a closely guarded secret from competitors.

Clorinated solvents as used in gear oil will increase load bearing abilities but at a cost -- wear. Fuller truck transmissions forbid the use of chlorinated oil in their transmissions and auxiliaries.

A friend who had a machine shop sneered at the lubrication engineer's salesman who I invited to give a demonstration of Almagard 3752 chassis lube. A "knowing" evil eye. He was fully prepared to embarrass the salesman (and me)

He had a lathe with a 48" swing and 26' bed. A monster powered with a ten horsepower hydraulic motor.

He disassembled the live center. Smeared the grease onto the contact points. Started the lathe on a speed of about 60 RPM then used the wheel on the live center to jam the center point into a round plug of about 18" in diameter.

His eyebrows rose. I smirked. Harder and harder he jammed the live center into the plug (which had had a pilot depression started in it).

He ended up jamming the point in as hard as he could twist the wheel. The live center point kept revolving in the disc. Smoke curled out. Expressions of amazement were made.

In the end, he placed a multi-thousand dollar order for LE products. Today he is retired. But he is as sanctimonious as a converted whoppee lady about the product.

Superior products do exist. But as a chemistry minor, I agree with the experts that a superior ani-friction product has to be engineered from the ground up starting with the base oil.

I keep meticulous records of fuel mileage. When a course has been repeated a few dozen times, then a significant change in fuel economy is noted, I pay attention. Via arm-twisting I tried the major Teflon oil additive. It had no discernible effect -- not even to the tenth of a gallon on repeated 155 mile round trips. I have to agree however -- it was Slick enough to get into my shorts.

Lubrication Engineers claimed their Amasol 607 gear oil would slow leaks at shaft entry points. It has done exactly that with several of my differentials and transmissions. From a quarter-size drop of oil on the concrete nightly to no drip at all in 2-weeks. I appreciate companies whose advertisements live up to the hype.

Other notable examples I have found are molybdenum filled versus chromium piston rings (good and bad points for each type).

But a claim that engineers devote time to taking a good product and purposely devote their skill to making it failure prone, is hard to swallow. It's usually a case of peer pressure design flaw by fiefdom or a lost war with the bean counters.

" the treatment is in the metal, not on the metal"..... Now, im not too smart, and i have voluntarily killed a brain cell or two, but... Doesn't friction occur on the outside of the metal part which is rubbing against the outside of another metal part? So in theory, you want the treatment on the outside of the part, not inside the metal of the part. ( there are exceptions of course, but I can't discuss those here......

There have been a good number of metal treatments over the years. Avblend for aircraft, and Lenkite for auto's(their the same product different names). I'm sure there are others. But the hands down all time winner is Marvel Mystery oil.(not technically a metal treatment but nearly as miraculous). When I use to inspect airplanes, I would blurt out to the owner "Don't put Marvel Mystery oil in the fuel", and they would say "How did you know?" It would deposit little clear beads on the plugs that I would have to clean off, and they would smell like Oil of Wintergreen which is in it. I would follow it up with "Why put anything in your fuel that's a mystery? But hey, in a car, I'd give the Maxilube a go. The Germans have an incredible lubricant, kind of like Vaseline, but the brand is VienerSlider. Very expensive.

The highest lubricity stuff available is dry lubricant colloidal graphite.

Followed by dry colloidal molybdenum disulfide.

Interesting MEX. I have often used Dri-Slide (Molybdenum Disulfide) when I needed a good Lube. Worked well.

Chrysler before it sold out to Damler. had a machine where it often broke down despite regular oil changes.. So they hired Castrol.

Castrol came in looked it over and wrote a contract Contract was not as cheap as regular oil changes but. Castrol put in their best, and tested it often and did whatever was needed oil wise.

For several years that machine ran trouble free.

Then Damler bought it looked at the Castrol contract said "TOO EXPENSIVE" and .. Well repairs to the machine make that contract look cheap not to mention the down time.

Now that's an interesting dilemma. If something is seized tight, an argument could be made that there is no friction and infinite friction all at the same time!

That said there are some metals with internal lubricity. High silicon aluminum (Vega engine blocks), bronze valve guides/bushings, and brushes/commutators for alternators/generators/motors to name a few.

Now the real trick is to get Maxilube to dissapear!
