Atwood G6A-8E water heater question

Anyone have information, on how to test the control module on a 99 year model Atwood G6A-8E 6 gallon water heater.

It has 12V power in the brown wire going to the thermostat & from the thermostat up to the control module.
You can hear a click like normal when switched on, but the igniter not sparking & I guess the gas not turning on, because it will not lite.
Thanks, Neil
  • I have an Atwood Model G6A-8E water heater that won't run without stopping and the red light going on. What I need to know are the operational parameters of the MPD 93307 control module.
    1) My measurement show the the controller only turns on gas for .8 seconds or 800 milliseconds before returning an error and shutting down the water heater.
    2) I can turn off and turn on the water heater 30 or more times and it will successfully ignite and run every time suggesting ignition is okay however if blow the gas out of the air shutter and burner tub with an air hose the fails to lite and operate 2 out of thee times. I think this suggest that perhaps 800 milliseconds is not sufficient time for the gas to propagate down the burner time and have ignition.

I contacted Atwood and they are completely useless in providing information

    Thanks for those replys folks.
It is testing out just like you are listing Old-Biscuit, 12V on brown threw thermo to module, but no 12V on red wire, so I guess module is bad.

Found a new module on e bay for $116.00 + shipping.
Could this control module be something Flight Systems could repair ?.
    Thanks, Neil

The manual will tell you how to test the module. Mine went out while on the road and the manual was easy to follow. It did turn out it was the module. I HIGHLY recommend going to A.S.A.P. for a replacement Dinosaur board. Not only did they have a great price they overnighted it to a drop off location for me to pick up while on the road. Great people to work with.

    ON EDIT:

If you do go with a Dinosaur board make sure you buy the mounting kit also. If not you run a risk of running the screws into the tank. You'll be converting from two screws to four.
  • Keep in mind there will only be power on the red wire for 7 seconds- while it is trying to fire a spark.

  • Battery power comes from ON/Off switch to the normal t-stat on Brown wire......thru closed t-stat back to module.

Battery power then leaves module on RED wire to ECO (high temp t-stat) then to gas valve solenoid to grd

Check for power from battery on Brown wire back to module at connector plug.
With power on Brown at connector...check for power on RED wire from connector.

Power going in on Brown wire but not coming back out on RED wire......bad module

Power coming out of module on RED wire but gas valve not opening.......check solenoid.

Even if gas valve Red wire doesn't have power the spark should as it gets power at same time gas valve does.

No power to gas valve..no spark occurring........sounds like bad module

If so go to Dinosaur Electronics.......much better control boards

  • go to this link http://bryantrv.com/docs.html and download the service manual. It is near the bottom of the page.
  • Thanks for the reply.

Yes, theres a red wire from the module to the gas valve.
I checked the ground wires mounted to the gas valve, that little mounting nut was rusty, so took it off & cleaned the wire end & mounted back up & put some WD40 on it.
Every connector I removed felt tight & was clean looking, so added a little WD to those as well.

Would be nice, if there was a way to bypass that control box & make the heater work manually.
    Thanks, Neil
  • Does it have red wires from module to gas solenoids? If its the same as mine, that is the 12v signal to open gas. Also check your ground connection.
My dealer told me there is a tester for the module that plugs into it. Mine was acting the same, and found poor connections was the problem. Good luck.
