Atwood Water Heater Shutting Down

I have an Atwood water heater, year 2000 gas only. Electronic ignition. Sorry I did not get the model and MH is now at a park. If I leave the door fully open, swung down, all is ok. Heats, shuts off, calls for more hot water and she fires up again to temp and shuts down, all as it should. Problem is I have to leave the door open. No difference seems to be taking place in the flame with door open and up to the closing point where I can not see it still, but the sound stay the same. Give it a few minutes and off she goes, will try a few times and I have to reset.
I thought the door was maybe touching a wire or pushing a wire against or away , but no.
Put a very short wire on the latch so door is opened only ½”, shuts down, so not a lack of air ? To me I think it sounds like a 747 passing close overhead and I can see some Orange flames. Never had a tool to fit the small bolt on the air mix in the gas line from the relay to the burner so I played around with a piece of tape over part of the slots. Got the sound down and a nice blue only flame, close the door, shuts down.
No wait time needed between shut down and reset and fire up. Last year mid season I installed new thermostat and that other thing that looks like it, the overheat protection thing.
Has to be something with heat trapped when the door is shut I am now thinking as I type this ????? Is maybe the thermostat getting hot and opening to fast? I’m sure it is covered with that piece of stuff that came with it. But I am thinking if it pops to the open state it will Not re close as soon as it is.
Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks for reading.

  • Thanks Old-Biscuit. Just back from the camp site. The model # is G6A8E.

Did all you mentioned except remove and clean the orifice ( forgot that step )..
Did not see anything really bad. There was wear signs of course and the rag got a dirty going back and forth in the burner / exhaust tube. Nearly polished everything else. Put everything back together and adjusted the flame as you suggested. She purred like a kitten and was pretty quite, I like. Closed the door, and and and, yip, within a minute, shut down, fired right backup and then off again. Goes into lock out after 2 burns. Leave the darn door open and she heats to correct temp, shuts down, use hot water and she fires up, comes to temp, shuts off, does all it should IF the door is open.
What has me confused is the fact if you turn it off after the lock out, it comes back right away, no wait. So you would think if there was a problem in that module black box which I'm sure contains electronic parts, and the extra inside heat caused by the closed door, would it not have to cool a little for the part to become good to go again? I can not see a loose connection but this weekend I'm taking a few jumper wires with me and bypassing the thermostat and the ECO.
If it is something inside the black box I'm sure once our weather warms up it'll happen with the door open as well? I'll have to prove that to myself before i go get a replacement.
Should I remember to remove and clean that orifice still ? Thanks much.

I would also clean the burner tube as it may have some debris.

ECO Opening would cause trigger 'Fault Ligh't and 'lock out'
  • Your burner assemble/combustion chamber is dirty

*Remove the burner tube--------clean using small bottle brush

*Remove the spark electrode from combustion chamber---clean using some emery/crocus cloth and wipe down ceramic with a silicone on a rag

*Remove main orifice from as valve-----soak in alcohol and then blow it dry (no poking things thru orifice)

*Run a wire thru combustion chamber out exhaust, tie a rag to wire and pull back thru 'U' tube

    Reassemble.....
    Clean/tight connections

Fire off and adjust air shuttle (loosen screw while burner tube is out) so Flame is Blue with tingles of orange at tips-----spark electrode engulfed in flame

The 'Thermal Fuse' (in the clear plastic tube connected to T-stat) is a 'Blow-Back' Safety Device. ONE SHOT FUSE that trips open at 190*F should the Main Flame blow back out of combustion chamber. Trips shutting down ALL DC so nothing works---have to replace if it opens.
