Bad smell from Pro Vent for washing machine

Noticed bad smell from out rear closet, which is adjacent and open to the washing machine closet. The smell wasn't so bad until we finally installed a washing machine, removing the cap from the preinstalled washing machine drain. Finally understood that the smell had always been coming from the grey water tank, via this Pro-Vent. Now, with the addition of the washing machine the Pro-Vent has obviously been more active.

The washing machine drain actually has a trap just below where the hose goes in, so the smell can't get back up the stack, but the line then T's into a stack with the Pro-Vent and that seems to be the source. Other than grey water deodorant, which is minimally effective, I don't know how else to address the situation. This adjoining closet is where most of our garments are stored and I don't want to wear clothes that smell like our grey water tank. Right now I have a latex glove covering the Pro-Vent but don't know what may occur as the washing machine drains.

Anybody got any ideas?

When the odor occurs in your rv are you absolutely sure the trap below the washer actually has enough water in it to provide a seal? Travel down the road can splash enough water out of the traps to unseal them. I would make sure after you've stopped traveling for the day to run a bit of water down each gray water drain line that has a trap to ensure that they have a seal in them.

No traveling has been involved. Been in one spot the whole time. Don't think there is any way the water has been sucked from the trap.

As I said, this washer is newly installed. The replacement air admittance valve, I purchased, seems to make no difference. I have used Calgon diswasher gel in the grey watter tank, in an effort to remove any possible contaminants from the tank walls. Seems to be better after dumping. Plan to add a few gallons of water and another dose of Calgon before our next move, to see if that will help clean the walls. If all else fails, I am looking at extending the pipe where the admittance valve is on up through the roof and eliminating the source for good.

  • Still have the problem. I bought a replacement air admittance valve, marketed by Kohler and sold at Lowes but still get the smell. It is easy to isolate the source at the valve. Now wondering if the extreme heat wave may exaserbate the situation.

This is my fourth RV washing machine but the first situation where the same grey water tank is used for the kitchen, as well as the bath and washing machine. I know the primary source for smells is the kitchen but we are as careful as possible to keep food particles from getting down the drain. Being a used RV I can't say the same for former owners. Grey water deodorant, in massive amounts, don't seem to help much.

Does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning the tank walls without endangering the system? I am about to go buy a couple of gallons of white vinegar and some baking soda to try. Wondering about any other product that may change the tank environment. Feels like maybe I need to travel some distance with some cleaning solution in the tank and see if it helps.
  • Yes. I deducted what that valve was supposed to do but was not familiar with the term "air admittance valve". Will get a new valve tomorrow.
  • If by 'pro-vent' you mean air admittance valve, throw away the cheapie and get a good one such as Oatey. Expect to pay upwards of $20. but as the old saying goes " you get what you pay for and pay for what you get".
    Art.
