I've read Handy Bob's blog a few times. He's off grid 365 days a year. I believe he said he replaced his batteries after 11 years. His main advice is to charge to the full voltage (temp compensated) that the battery is designed for. In the case of the Trojans he used, that is 14.8v. He had 345w of solar, and no generator. He lives in sunny country. He said they were not wasteful, but they didn't feel they had to skimp on usage.
