Battery Question

Does it hurt anything to plug into shore power with the battery disconnected? I have a travel trailer 30 amp system.

If your trailer is old enough to come with a Magnetek 6300 series converter. they say it will not work without a battery or a battery simulator.. I've seen it work without one however.

I assume there are other converters that are like this as well but have never encountered one (But then I'm not an RV technician, Just a man who lends a hand).

Most converters do not care if there is a battery.

One possible problem and a simple solution.

IF the positive leads come in contact with the metal battery tray,< BAD THINGS HAPPEN.

Slip a sock over 'em. (and a plastic bag over that or inside it).
  • Depends on the inverter. Some supply clean power without a battery connected, others are extremely dirty and excessively high voltage since they are expecting a nice low impedance battery to be on its output. And if you get it wrong it's possible to lose smoke from some devices.

Some trailers with SLIDES need the extra power the battery adds to make them work smoothly. If you have a smart mode converter/charger unit I would just leave the battery connected to the grid.

That is what we do here...

  • The battery acts like a voltage regulator to hold down or hold up the voltage. In the instrustions for my sat receiver it states that a battery MUST be connected. And maybe the furnace and refer too because they operate on 12 volts. I know that you can do without the battery but I would not
  • Make sure you disconnect the ground side of the battery, not the hot, or positive side. Should be fine.
