Brake Magnet Wire Color

The wires are interchangeable. Color isn't important. The best thing you can do is get self-adjusting brakes to replace the manual adjustment. The power is determined by the current supplied to it.

Call Dexter axle and talk to a tech. They are very helpful whenever I have called. I am not sure if wire colors are different but I do believe there are different strength magnets.

I just checked, my old 7,000 brakes have white wires. The new ones have white.

Doesn't matter. The magnet is a coil. Power goes in one side and out the other.

The wire color is used for identification purposes.

I believe the question is if there is a difference is magnet strength between different color wires, and according to the manual OB linked to there is only a difference in 7" brakes, listing their current draw at 2.5. All other magnets are listed at 3 amps, so they are identical in strength.

These are DC magnets--magnetic pull is directly proportional to current flow. 3 to 3.2 amps is about standard. The resistance of the coils and wiring will determine the maximum current flow. I've helped several trailers in the family by running a 12 gauge wire to each axle which is about the equivalent of one 8 gauge wire to both. This improved voltage drop by about a volt. Voltage at the coil is all that matters. Our trailer came with one 14 gauge wire to both axles which was the Lippert recommendation. That is pathetically small IMO.

The following is off subject of wire color. It sounds like the OP is trying to improve trailer braking performance, so I'll tell my story of the same. We upgraded from Lippert 4400 lb. axles with 10" drums to Lippert 5200 lb. axles with 12" drums trying to improve brake performance, but it was still not enough. Talking to Dexter support I got the feeling that the magnets were all about the same, but that the brake linings became more aggressive as the axles went on up to 6000 and 7000 lb. capacity. So I had Dexter 7000 lb. self adjusting backing plates installed in my axles. I guess I have them strong enough now since I can skid them on wet surface and in a panic stop two months ago, I ripped a rear spring hanger half off. Funny thing is that the self adjusters still don't get the brakes as tight as the recommendations for manual adjustment--the wheels will spin several turns. But at the same time, they probably don't let the adjustment get extremely loose.
