Brake question

As we are taking our TT and two other trailers to CA next month I'm taking them all to a mechanic/friend to have axles serviced. Two days ago I towed the flatbed to him and all lights worked as well as the trailer's brakes. Yesterday I hooked up a small utility 5x8 Haulmark van that hasn't been moved in more than two years and towed it with the same vehicle. Lights worked but the brakes did not.

He hasn't called me yet to say what's wrong, but I am curious. Even if the brake battery is dead, shouldn't the brakes have worked being hooked to the TV? If so, what else? A bad ground? :@

  • The brakes should function normally without the battery on the trailer. Does your brake controller have power?

The breakaway brake battery is only used when the breakaway switch is activated, and plays no role in braking when properly hooked to the tow vehicle.

Add that to all I don't know about wiring.

Non-braking could be caused by a bad ground, a bad brake wire connection, bad brake adjustment, stuck brake mechanisms, bad breakaway brake switch, and probably a host of other possibilities...

  • Could be blown fuse, bad wiring, bad connections, bad magnets etc etc \\

Your friend will figure it out..........lot easier then us guessing....he gets to see/test things
