Always at least one bozo out in left field on these threads. However, there are a bunch of guys that post regularly here in Tech Issues that really know their stuff on solar and elec issues in general. I have a good working knowledge of electricity and residential NEC but no direct experience with solar and charge controllers and such. Actually most of what I know about batteries and charging I have learned from the guys here.

Why not report the posts to the moderator with your proof that the information is dangerous? I can honestly say, I don't know enough about electricity to know good vs. dangerous info. If you approach a moderator, maybe they can remove (or at least caveat) the dangerous info.

I assumed it was humor ;)

OP appears to be referring to a QUESTION that was asked recently in the "24v panels . . ." thread. Are questions not allowed now?

I am sorry to see the problem of bum info being twisted into a personal vendetta, but more or less half the info in ANY thread is of the "bum" variety (okay, maybe even 80%). This is the whole point of a discussion, and the value of critical thinking. "Experts" can present their argument for their "peers" to review, and the rest of us can grab a bag of popcorn and chuckle till we choke.

I'm here to learn not "chuckle and choke". Guess that explains some of the attitudes here. If this place is supposed to be a joke, PLEASE let me know now.

Hooking up a 24 V panel, capable of 30V with no regulator, diretly to a 12V battery, should be enough info. Someone tries this on an expensive AGM or Surret or Rolls battery, because they read it here, and they're not going to be happy with the results or the replacement cost. And any other electrical equipment that gets roasted along the way.

No personal vendetta, just saying, check for reasonableness.

Thought process like above leads to "Well, I put a 24v panel on a 12bv system, why not just put 240V into my 120V system, it worked the last time." Folks, don't do this, at home, or on your rig.

Unless you truly know what you are doing... not a good idea to try and adapt a 24v system to a 12v system, unless you lay out the caveats and risk and a release form. IMHO, I see it as bad form. Keep 12v 12v and 24v systems 24v. The average laymen around here could really get in a pickle when seeds like these are planted outside the lab or folks that don't have the EE backround start mixing and matching.

That certainly explains MY attitude here, or at least part of it.

If a self-appointed group of experts is going to shun others who ask questions they don't like, then those experts have made a mockery of any expertise they truly have, and I'm going to keep chuckling.

Most chuckle-worthy, IMO, are those experts who spend more time and effort scolding someone for asking a question, then simply asnwering the question, and enlightning us all.

Before you ask, I'm exempt from the previous by not having any expertise.

Niner, you can make any number of excuses, but you could have pointed that out in the thread the question qas asked in, where those who read the question might not have understood the risk. Aren't we all here to learn?

So are you saying it's NOT safe to connect 24v panels to charge a 12v battery bank even if you have an MPPT controller (whatever that is...)? I took away that it was OK to use 24v panels to charge 12v batteries as long as you had the right charge controller in the circuit to manage the process. Is that not correct?

Although I can't say I agree with greenrvgreen's attitude in this thread, he makes a good point that BS should be called in the original thread to help guys like me separate fact from fiction.
