Can Dexter EZ-Lube axles be serviced as regular axles?

Hello,

Not exactly RV-related, but I am looking at a small utility trailer with a Dexter 3500-lb. axle with the EZ-lube bearing set-up. I have never really liked this system, and was wondering if they can be serviced manually just like a normal axle - can I disassemble the hub and grease the bearings by hand? Can I swap the EZ-lube caps out for regular caps?

Thanks,
Regan

  • I treat mine like regular axles, never have used a grease gun. :)
  • Thanks for the replies, everyone, I appreciate the help. For those who asked why bother about changing the caps, I have found on some of my father's equipment trailers set up with similar systems that the plastic/rubber seal between the cap and the grease fitting deteriorates or gets loose, then leaks water into the hub and holds it there. A couple sheet metal caps cost very little, and aren't going to let water in nearly as easily.

Besides, I like to see that the inner seals are still good, as well as the bearing surfaces, etc. so I prefer to do this job manually.

I do agree that the extra grease would be of less concern on these little trailers without brakes; thanks for pointing that out!

    Safe travels everyone, thanks again!

  • If your utility trailer doesn't have brakes, I would just use the EZ-lube set-up as is. No need to worry about leaky seals allowing grease on brake linings.

If it were me, I would disassemble them once for inspection to check if all was good and bearing clearances were within specs.
  • Yes, you can do a manual regrease, and yes, you can change the caps, although I don't see any reason to do so.

And IMO many of the issues with the EZ Lube system is caused by lousy parts, and ham-handed assembly of those parts. I have had no issues with mine, but after checking them out I found that many of the seal bearing surfaces were damaged. Luckily not badly or in such a position to cause grease leakage, but it was a near thing.
  • Sure you can. But why waste money on changing the caps?
  • Yes you can. The only thing differant about EZ lube is it has a hole drilled into the shaft to get grease into the rear bearing and then around to the front. I think EZ lube got a bad rap because people over greased and did not turn the wheel as they greased. Think about it. Your new car can't even be greased. They have "cartridges" that you replace. More of your money. But I suppose you then don"t pay a mecanic labor to grease it. Done right the grease job should last years and many miles.
