Can you guesstimate panel watts?

I got a free solar panel that's about 12 x 36. If I measure open circuit voltage and shorted current in fairly full sun can that provide valid data from which to estimate wattage capacity? What would a correction factor be?
  • Jury-rig a load to take the panel (oriented mid day to full sun) to 12.0 volts. Measure load amperage. That is your usable panel power. Over in Michoacan I have a 500-watt 20 ohm Ohmite rheostat just for that purpose. (Thanks Lockheed surplus auction!)
  • To answer the question yes..
It will provide info we can compare with know panels
    And give a good guesstimate

getting 1 amp in full sun would be spectacular!

If s person were positioned on the equator of the planet Mercury

  • Nope, the solder would melt.

0.8 amp was not uncommon shorted, 31 degrees north, 96 west, earth

folks said it wouldn't help, folks be wrong!

Probably 50-60W. Is it covered in clear plastic or glass?

HF 15W is amorphous, those are less efficient per sq.ft. though more efficient in low light.

Either one isn't much more than a maintainer. I remember a 60W tilted panel on the roof of a rental cabana in winter Mexico. By the evening they could turn on LED string lights for a couple of hours. That's all.
