Ceiling light lense replacements

We recently purchased a 2012 KZ Durango 5w 295cs, and all the ceiling lights have clear lense covers. We are finding the glare intolerable in the evening and have been unable to find the correct frosted alternative. Other then taping paper over them or even painting them, is there a better solution or any tips on how to find the replacement. We have no info on the lights except "made in Taiwan". The generic manual offers no info.
  • Some Thinlite fluorescent fixtures have option of prismatic or opaque frosted lens. Choice is good.

I went the other way, from the milky opaque lens to the clear prismatic. Clear lenses pass about 20-30 percent more light. On fluorescent fixtures glare usually isn't a problem, the light is diffuse from the source.

Replacing the fixtures is a little too expensive a solution....and we did find similar looking lenses on eBay...ordered and hoping for a good fit. There are indeed many lenses out there, but many different sizes and shapes without any corresponding part numbers! A guessing game!

100 grit sandpaper on the inside of the lens will frost the surface and cut the glare.

    Worth a try.....thanks!
  • 100 grit sandpaper on the inside of the lens will frost the surface and cut the glare.
  • Another solution is to purchase a sheet of theatrical frost. It is designed to spread the light from fixtures with 1000 watt lamps, so heat isn't a problem. There are many different frosts available - I use Rosco 115, available in a 20" X 22" sheet for about $6.00 - $8.00 from your nearest theatrical supplier or on the web from Adorama for around $7.00. Just cut it to fit.

While you will lose some output, they even make colored frosts that can be used to shift over blue LED sources back to warm white.

  • It sounds as though you may not be wild about the idea, but Rustoleum does make a clear frosted spray paint.
