Changing a Kwikee one step to two step

I think my auto one step has finally had it, I've replaced the motor a couple of times over the year's and all has been well until the latest. Anyways, I have a Series 28 one step and I'd like to change it to a two step. As far as I've been able to tell, there is no direct replacement. The Series 32 two step is about 1/2 wider and I think I have enough clearance to allow this change. Just wondering if anyone else has made the change from one to two steps and what other things I might run into making this change?
Thanks for any info....

  • I don't know how much I can help you but you do need to know that Kwikee is no more. There have been at least two owners since they retired. I am not sure how much difference there is in the dimensions but I think the size is still the same.

IIRC they have stopped using the window lift motors of old and the new steps come with exposed gearing. The new owners as I remember are Lippert Components. There is a fact sheet that gives the dimensions and should be available on line. The mounting bolt pattern is different and the rise is about 4 inches more with the Series 32. The extension is about 9 inches more.

I'd measure the rise for both stored and extended to make sure you will have clearance. In the stored position the step from front to back is almost 2 inches greater.

I kind of like to see stuff so I cut out profiles and hold them up to judge the fit. Pretty easy to do and is a little more descriptive than a tape measure.

    Good luck and have fun.

Our coach is a 2003 model year, probably built in 2002. I mention that because if your step is OEM, it's probably covered by Manual 875, and a new step by Manual 888. Best I could tell from trying to work on an "875" step with an 888 manual, it was the control box and gearing arrangement that changed. But I don't know about the rest of the step. That big steel part...

You of course need to find out if two-step doesn't extend too far, and hit the site pad before it's fully extended. I can tell you how far our 40 Series two-step drops but I don't know what the series differences are.

The other thing for me, would be "Does the 32 step's mounting bolt pattern match my 28's pattern?"

I don't know if this "Identification Guide" will help you, but I notice that the "28" and the "32" step assembly part numbers both begin with the same group of digits, then "28" or "32"

  • I would GUESS...as long has you have no "height" problems, and the space to mount it (widthwise) why not? Got the clearance? Go for it....and g'luck!
