Clearance Lights Trouble--Fixed :)

Have one string of three back clearance lights that won't light now. Two did and an end one didn't before I tried to fix that one.

Each fixture has one lamp terminal to a screw hole so it grounds on the skin of the camper (it seems) and the other lamp terminal has a yellow wire to it.

The yellow wire on the end one that wasn't working is single to the fixture but (I assume it's the same wire) goes in and out of the other two fixtures so it looks like two yellow wires on the back of each of them, but I think it is all one wire for the three lamps. ???

Down at the 7-pin where the #3 green comes into the camper it splits into three green wires and they go up inside somewhere. Each of the three greens has 12v.

At each of the three lamps that are not on, I am getting just a tiny voltage like 0.03 instead of 12v

I don't know where the green changes to yellow. My next move is to take out the tail light fixture (which works) and see if the yellow goes up from there to those three clearance lights on that side of the camper, but first --

Anybody familiar with this situation? Getting frustrating.
Do the three bulbs have to be in so it all works? I took out a bulb over on the left side string and the other lamps stayed on, so I suspect that isn't it.

Of course I managed to short out the whole circuit back to the 7-pin a couple times, so now I know where the 15a fuse is for that in my truck :( Anyway, truck fuse ok, pin #3 ok, front yellow lights on, left side back upper red lights on, left and right tail lights on, right side upper red lights (two on back, one around on the side at back) not on. The middle upper red light at the back is on.

So I am off to an auto store for some more 15a fuses and clearance lamp bulbs, and am hoping to find out what to do right here when I get back :) Thanks!

  • Mohammed not care if mountain come on UPS truck. Glad you got it fixed BFL.

Reversing or subsritute circuit power input is a fundamental lighting troubleshooting technique.
  • Update-Fixed. (This was on the 1981 Frontier camper) The right tail light green wire went inside so never learned if it turned yellow going up. Or it might be all be behind the left one which I didn't take out.

Anyway, the string of three reds up on the right that were dead went on with power to the yellow wire where I cut into it up there so it was not a ground issue. To supply that yellow I bridge-wired over to the left externally.

I didn't use the trickle charger as power. Just linked #3 and #4 in the camper 7-pin so the camper battery was supply instead of the truck.

Three reds in the middle of the camper. Linked yellow wire for the left one that was working with the dead right one's and that lit up the other two farther on the right as well. So all lights on. :)

Culprit was the middle lamp of the three in the middle. It was working ok it seemed, but I noted it was a different fixture that a previous owner must have installed. Took it off and there was the yellow for it with a loose contact and some stray wires that could touch the skin. Seems that was blowing the truck fuses when fiddled with and not making contact with the other lamps. Or whatever--what a waste of a day! Oh well, owning an RV is not for the weak! :(

Thanks for the good tips everybody. Got me on the right path, including using past threads on clearance lights in Search. The Forum saved me again. :)
  • Each is grounded by a screw to the skin for one terminal and the yellow wire is to the other terminal of them all. Can one of them with a poor ground kill all three?

Mex, I will do that with my trickle charger that has clamps. Can't blow the truck fuse that way either!

Honorable camper must think outside box...

    Bring Mountain to Mohammed.

Introduce 12 volts at LIGHT and go in reverse.
  • Some are tapped off the taillights. Pop a cover off any see if there is multiple wires there.
Common to have splices behind the fixtures.
Wires may change color in the junction box at the trailer umbilical cord change over to trailer wiring under tongue or in front.
