I mostly dry camp so I don't turn the water heater on until I am ready to take a shower and only use the hot water handle so I don't waste water adjusting to get the right temperature. In the summer(70-80 degrees) it takes 10 mins to warm up enough for a shower. In the fall(40-50 degrees) it takes twice as long.
  • Recovery rates are based on 70*F inlet water temp.......

So the lower the inlet temp the longer the recovery rate.

Turn it on and then when you break camp turn it off
  • Hi,

At -10 c (14 f) ambient the water heater on the electric setting takes about 120 minutes before it first cycles. In the spring and fall at 20 c (68 f) the time to first cycle is 90 minutes.

As 20ldman said, it will cycle more often, the colder it is outside.
  • I don't think you'll see much of a difference either but if it's in the 20's I would sure leave it on.

somewhat. the colder the water, the more energy it will take to heat the water, so yes it will take somewhat longer.

However, we turn the WH off when we go to bed, and turn it on in the morning. Water is still usually warm in the AM, even in the low 30's and 20's.

But I'll bet you won't really notice much difference in recovery time until it is near 0F.
