Connecting Honda with Yamaha generators in parallel?

I have a Yamaha EF2000i and a friend has one of the similar Honda 2000 generators, and I'm curious if I can connect them in parallel. I know that they are each capable, but I wasn't sure if that had to be a Yamaha-Yamaha or Honda-Honda connection for some reason, or if I could do Yamaha-Honda.

I found a similar topic thread from a couple years ago that sounded like this should theoretically work, but no one in the thread had tried it yet, and that thread was closed so I couldn't simply respond in the same thread.

Anyone know if that will work before I try it and screw something up?

    100% correct.

Yes, it should work (I've actually dug through the schematics, specs, etc of the Honda). The way their circuit is designed, it senses for voltage on the output, if there is AC voltage there, the circuit tries to sync up the output of the inverter to this voltage, if it can't it trips the safety and stops trying.

All that being said, I've never tried tying the Honda to a "hot main" and starting it.
  • Except, it won't "goof up" anything. The whole point of the synchronization system is to protect the generator. When it sees something goofy going on, it disconnects itself by tripping the overload.

There is proof that the Honda will sync up to any 120VAC power source. Google it. It'll work with mains power, inverter output, and other brands/sizes of generator. If the power it senses is something it can match, it will.

I have no doubt a honda and a yamaha will work together, but at worst, one or both of them will simply trip their overload protection. Disconnect, shut down, and restart them separately, and all will be fine.

  • Plug in the parallel signal cables, but not the power cables.
Connect only the Neutral side of the plug from each generator (to eliminate a floating neutral differential between the two).
Measure the voltage between the plugs of each generator on the Line/Hot. It should be 0VAC (or really close to it) meaning that they have synced phasing. If there is a voltage difference between the two, then they haven't synced and very bad things will happen if they are paralleled.

Shoot, even connecting the paralleling cables could goof up the internals and it would never have parallel capability again.
  • Ya think maybe the synchronization protocol might be proprietary to thwart this very thought? Honorable Oriental thinking included much committee discussion of this very subject. Beware.
  • If they did sync up, which they might, the combo wouldn't share the load very well because the voltages are incompatible. The Hondas tend to run in the high 120s, and the Yamahas in the low 120s. My best guess is that the Honda would be running full bore before the Yamaha comes off of idle. Anybody who tries it has to assume the risk of a bad result.
  • Nobody I know. Risky. Can't find anything on google. Very few people own a Y and an H.
