Cracked refrigerator door hinge

Went to set up the rv today and noticed a piece of plastic Laying on the floor under the fridge. The upper hinge on the lower (fridge) door has partially cracked off.
Does anyone know if that part can be replaced or do I need a new door?? It's a Dometic RM 2862...
I'll call PPL in the morning....

  • Thought I would give an update on my door repair. The hinge repair kit is pretty slick and I'm glad I went that route instead of springing for a new door. The kit actually makes your hinge stronger than new, installed fairly easy, and you really don't notice the repair. Way cheaper than a new door. One caveat is that your door hinge can't be broken too badly for the kit to work as you still need some hinge material to support the bushing.
  • I don't know if it's the same as the Norcold door, but I made my own out of 1/8" aluminum for $10.00 from Home Depot. I painted it black with Rustoleum black paint I already had. Let's see if the images work. If so this first pic is the brace or bracket on the door off the fridge.

Here is the bracket with the door back on the fridge.

I didn't have the screws, so the whole job actually cost me $12.00. I am not very handy so I can tell you this is very easy to do!

Found that the hinge is integral to the door so you either have to buy a new door or I have found a repair kit that consists of a metal bracket that gets screwed on over the broken hinge.
So I ordered the repair kit for $60 instead of a new door for $200. We'll see how it works out. I do almost completely empty my fridge for travel since I have a rear kitchen and have had some problems in the past. Thanks all for the help.

A piece of advice, which is like many such pieces in that I don't follow it myself:

Unload the Door while Traveling, Put Back on Arrival.

If it's the door itself that's damaged, would it be possible to run a piece of angle aluminum across the bottom?
  • I'm going to assume your talking about the plastic part that's an integral part of the door that the hinge pin sits in.. as most hinge brackets are metal. Mine cracked several years ago and I've been unable to locate a reasonably priced replacement door/door frame. My solution was to rebuild the hinge using JB Weld. Lots of shaping, sanding and drilling done with a dremel but it looks pretty good and has held up for 5 years now. I'm full-time so that's a lot of use.

If you don't want to go that route you might try locating a replacement door at some of the RV salvage yards.

Hinges are movable to allow left/right installation, so should be replace-able.
