Direct Tv Hd Upgrade

We have been using our old dtv small satellite and Sd receiver for Over 10 years. We had to get a new receiver and it's a plain Jane HD receiver. I have used a baby monitor to listen to the audio tone in the past. The new receiver, I don't think makes a tone during alignment. Any advice for Aligning our Slimline HD dish.

  • Thanks for all the input. I am going to give it shot tomorrow. Hopefully I don't give it a real shot. Thanks again
  • The Genie HR44 has the audible tones back. I use a wireless baby monitor vs a dedicated much more expensive meter that is SWM compatible.
  • I just ponied up last year. So here are my thoughts.

I am assuming you have a slimline 3 HD dish that has built in SWM capability.

So find out if your new receiver is SWM compatible, I assume it is since I have one relatively new one that is.

I take the Genie receiver with me when i travel. i cannot stand to watch live TV with commercials. So I watch mostly recorded stuff so i can fast forward thru the commercials.

My Slimline 3 hooked to the Genie still gives the same old signal tones when aligning the dish.

When doing the final tuning, The wife and I put the cell phones on speaker and I can hear the tone outside at the dish and she also gives me the % signal.

my story and I am sticking to it. You just cannot beat that capability of recording multiple programs over one cable.
  • Having been through this a couple of years ago, here's my two cents.

    1. You have to set the receiver to use a standard 18" round dish
    2. You have to set the receiver to show Standard Definition channels
    3. You have to set the receiver to use Multiswitch NOT SWM

Alignment is the same as a standard dish box.
Not having the "beeping" sound is ultra frustrating!
Satellite finders are not really useful.
When I have line of sight, I can generally get the satellite in about 10 minutes.

Don't forget to reset your box when you return home. Don't forget to look at your settings before you leave home and write them down.

  • I have used an in line signal meter for years with our standard receiver. About the time I get the dish peaked out my wife usually tells me it is downloading the guide.

  • still use the baby monitor or walkie talkies and one person inside and one outside. Or how about a satellite meter?
  • One person inside watching the screen and one person outside adjusting the dish.

I have a setup from tv4rv so I usually don't need anybody inside unless I am trying to fine tune.
