Divorced battery bank wiring?

Forgive me if this has been covered, I could not come up with search terms that gave me the answer I was looking for.

If I have 4 6 volt batteries, 2 near the power distrabution center and 2 20 feet away how do I connect them up?

Do I series the remote pair and bring back 12v or do I parallel them and bring back 6V?

Which will give me the most even battery usage?

TIA!

  • Just wondering why the batteries are so far apart? Just seems like a problem waiting to happen. And also some mighty expensive copper that will have to be run between them.
  • Each cube of three cells is half of a battery. You must series connect both "halves" to get a useable battery.

The gauge of connection wire is mainly determined by the amount of amperes who need to have flowing between the single one bank pairs of batteries. Twenty feet apart 2/0 wire is not unreasonable. That is known also as 00 wire, as big as your thumb. Forty feet total of electricity travel. You cannot fool around too much or you're going to get into trouble with imbalanced states of charge and other Prozac sales tools.
  • Are you talking in terms of balancing the charge/draw between all of the batteries? Theoretically, I would tie each pair together for 2 12v pairs, then tie the two pairs together for double the current, then hook positive to one pair, negative to the other. This will add 20 feet of cable required and add 20 feet of cable to the entire system. I think I would be tempted to use an a/b switch instead, or accept that they will not be balanced.
  • For best balance consider wiring in parallel at each location. Location close to the charging source gets the positive connection. Then pull the interconnect wire to the remote location and again connect to the positive. Then remote location negative goes direct to the frame.
  • each pair is series as 1 12v
then bring 12v from the distant pair to parallel with the close pair
