Dmax limp mode, fuel rail pressure too low - Anyone else?

A few weeks back I went on a working trip that involved one of our major mountain passes.

It was hot out, I'm towing my 27' TT with my D/A dually and I no sooner hit the beginning of the Coquihalla Highway, a very steep mountain pass, and my truck suddenly lost power, check engine light came on and it went into limp mode. Argh! Won't rev over 2000 RPM. I limped it all the way to Kamloops, some hundred miles away. I stopped for fuel, then carried on. I stopped at a store for some supplies and when I came out and started it up, check engine light was out and the truck ran normal again.

I went another hundred miles or so, did my work and headed home, everything ok. As soon as I got back to Kamloops and hit the big hill again, same thing happened. I got part way up a long hill in limp mode, turned around, found a dealer and had them read the code.

P0087 - Fuel rail - pressure too low. They reset it and I went on my way home but the light came back on right away.

I limped all the way home and when I got out of the mountains and on the flats at the coast again, problem went away. Dropped the TT at storage and the issue never came back again.

Took truck in for service, oil change and had them put a fuel filter on it. Hopefully this makes a difference. Old one had a lot of miles on it.

Fast forward to last weekend - grabbed the TT and headed to BC's Okanogan Valley to take a couple of my grandsons camping. Shortly into the mountains on Hwy 3 up a long hill, same scenario.

This time I had my code reader with me and I pulled over, hooked it up and erased the code. From there on I made sure I used manual mode, kept the revs up and didn't labor the engine too much. It happened one more time before I reached Penticton, our destination.

Had a great weekend with the grandsons and headed home, driving cautiously. No problems on the way home, even up a long major grade out of Princeton on Hwy 3.

This Friday I am heading up to BC's Cariboo region for the Labor Day long weekend. I am concerned about this issue. I don't have time to take it to the dealership for their expensive "throw all new parts at it" attitude.

Anyone else have this problem?

Any ideas on the cause of it?

Any suggestions?

It's a real pain going up a major hill at 20MPH having all the big rigs passing me!

  • DMax does not have in tank fuel pump. Injector pump sucks all the way from the tank.

I'm intrigued by the potential of the soft hose issue and am glad to be aware of that potential issue.

Many DMAX owners have added inline fuel pumps on the frame near the tank.

As said before, checkout the forum dieselplace.com as there is a wealth of info and help from many very experienced techs and owners!!

    Good luck!
  • When was the last time the fuel filter was changed ? I had the exact same symptoms four weeks ago, I changed the fuel filter and she came right back to life.

If you don't find the answer here, try TheDieselPlace forum. It is a great resource for Duramax engines.

Or any of the other GM/Chevy D/Max forums.

  • Thanks a bunch for the info guys.

Wizard, I don't know for sure but I think the pump is in the tank.
Yes problem is uphill under load, and only while towing my TT. I can go up a hill without TT and stuff my foot into it all the way with no problem.

I did not think of the fuel cap. Recently I put a locking cap on, about a year ago. I have towed many times since then, but anything could happen. I kept the OEM cap and can put it back on for my upcoming trip. Thanks for that thought. Or I could drive a ways with the cap removed....

I have poked around on thedieselplace - I am a member there too. I read a bunch of generic info but nothing definitive came to light. Maybe I need to dig further.

Heisenberg, thanks for the link. I'll check that out too. I read something somewhere about the rubber lines but have not crawled under to see what they look like. I also have not seen a TSB on the matter. I'll look into that too. Thanks for the link.

    thanks guys.

I had a friend with the exact same problem. He had rubber portions of supply lines collapsing due to heat, kinking, and high vacuum. (vacuum via fuel pump pulling fuel from tank) What made it so hard to figure out was everything looking normal in the shop under cooler conditions. I think it was a TSB which came out and the dealer notified him of the problem and repaired/replaced sections of the supply line. Wish I had more detail.

I think this is it. I remember something about firewall and hot transmission = soft rubber.

I'm betting also this is the ptoblem. Duramax has no "pusher" pump at the tank. It pulls it's fuel by vacuum from the tank. Any line collapsing or leaking air in would cause this.

  • sounds like a fuel pump problem
is there a pump in the fuel tank, or on the frame near the fuel tank ?

problem is UP hill Under load ... not going down hill or level ground

you have a weak pump or maybe a bad fuel tank cap, not venting and causing a partial vacuum in the tank
