- SCVJeffExplorerYou may need parallel runs of 4/0 to pull that off.

Bigcity,
This is exactly the sort of thing that I did for the owners of performance cruisers (big fast sail yachts) before the depression.
I can answer your question very easily...
And, there are two answers...
1 - Because you if you have to count on it and one section goes down for what ever reason, you don't want the entire system down.
2 - Because there is no "One Size Fits All" answer.
What size house bank?
How much solar?
How much inverter?
If you want it, I will build you one.

Im running 440AH with two banks for 6v GC2 batteries. I'd like to run 1k-1.5K inverter... The odd part is my Converter is on one end, and my batteries on the tongue of the rig... - SCVJeffExplorer

Which one does solar?
Look up Victron Energy. They everything you need.

MM49 - wa8yxmExplorer IIIDiscreates are dandy, Here is some logic.
Now I do not have solar but I have both an inverter/converter and a converter only.
So, when the inverter lost its mind (Display said "Prosine Memory Error") And I had to send it back west for replacement... I simply hooked the IN 120 volt leads to the OUT-120 volt leads (NOTE: Labeled them BEFORE I disconnected them) and shipped the box.. I still had 12 volt from the PDI 9180+Wizard, and I had 120 to everyhting when on shore power.
IF, however, I'd removed the PDI as CW suggested when I had em put in the Prosine... I'd have had no 12vdc.
WIth a solar converter, a shore converter, and an inverter or inverter/converter as I have. YOu have back ups.. IF one system fails, you ahve others that can keep you in 12 volts.
NOTE: I like the PDI programmign better than the Prosine for charging so I use it normally. but from time to time things happen, THe PDI is a plug in (Has a genuine plug that goes in the slots in the power outlet box) I have been known to snag the cord and NO POWER. When that happens it is usually about 3am when I figure it out.. CLICK and the Prosine puts out 12 volt. A literal practiceing what I am preaching here. BACK UP GOOD. no back up not so hot. - Shadow_CatcherExplorerX3 I purposefully have chosen discrete equipment. I have two Morningstar solar controllers for the trailer mounted and a roll out flexible panel a Morningstar inverter for when we will be off grid that can be left home when we will have AC...

I will take separate components whenever possible.

Matt - MrWizardModeratorTo me seems expensive, to repair replace
Things fail and the more complicated the more costly
Many people have had a converter or inverter fail ,
Think of the cost and trouble have your solar and and all electrical in one unit - Nice until one small part stops working.
I will take separate components whenever possible.
