Duration vs. Berg Extended Run Tank for Honda EU1000/EU2000

The Duration 6 gal. Extended Run tank seems to use the same 6 gal. fuel tank as the Berg. The major difference appears to be the Duration connects to the existing OEM Honda gas cap, whereas the Berg uses a machined aluminum gas caps which temporarily replaces the OEM Honda gas cap when in use.

With the Duration, I believe the OEM Honda gas cap's center valve assembly is removed leaving a vacant hole. The end of the Duration fuel line is slipped through the vacant hole (along with two o-rings) and tightened down with a wing-nut.

For various reasons I'm not fond of the Berg's aluminum gas cap. Has anyone used the Duration extended run tank? Any comments about the way the Duration connects to the OEM Honda gas cap? Does it seal well?

  • Bergs is the kit that I have. I'm pretty sure I bought it from Wise Sales quite a few years ago. The aluminum caps thread on fairly tight making them feel like something is wrong, but they have not caused any damage to the plastic threads on the generator.

I just looked it up real quick and it looks like these extended run setups are getting pretty expensive these days. I remember only paying $129 for mine and now that price will only get you the caps, hoses and fittings. I still wouldn't bat an eye at the cost of a system that works so well. The extended run tank was the best investment I ever made for my dual Honda generators.

All I used was a typical MIPT x barb fitting from a local hardware store. it worked fine, but the only way to seal the cap off was to use a vacuum line cap on the barb. I also wanted quick disconnects and figured out by the time I bought all the fittings and spare caps that I needed to do it right, I could just buy a complete kit and be done with it.
Thanks for the explanation. I can see how the cost for all that small stuff could add up quick. So, which complete kit did you buy? Do you have any fitment issues with the aluminum caps?

You will still need a extra set of caps for each Honda generator, you have to remove the shut off to install a barb fitting in the cap, I have a two generator setup for my tank and use the original caps with the shut offs for travel.
I'm assuming what you're describing is very similar to those being sold on eBay with an elbow or straight barb installed on an OEM Honda gas cap. Did you use one of those 5/16" or 3/8" brass fittings similar to those sold at Lowes or Home Depot?

What kind of gas container are you using?

    Thanks!

I haven't used the Duration kit, but I originally did a DIY kit much the same way. I was never really happy with it so I bought the aluminum caps. The quick connects and aluminum caps are pretty hard to beat and they allow for you to maintain a good seal with your OEM caps for travelling.
In your DIY attempt, are you saying you inserted some kind of insert into the middle of the OEM cap with the fuel hose attached--similar to the Duration? If so, where did you purchase the inserts? Did you have problems with an air leak (i.e., insufficient fuel flow)? Thanks.
