The summer season begins on June 1 of each year and ends on August 31 of each year.

The non-summer season begins on September 1 of each year and ends on May 31 of each year.

While it doesn't seem as draconian as Mexico, Southern California Edison is close. 4 Tiers, baseline allotment is around 375KWh depending on exact location.

Baseline rate is $0.15,
Tier 2 is 100-130% baseline at $0.19
Tier 3 is 130-200% baseline at $0.25
Tier 4 is over 200% baseline at $0.31

Plus lots of other "fees"

If you live on the coast and don't need AC it isn't too bad. When I lived in a small condo 30mi from the beach my bill was around $30. I now live inland. For my current small 1200ft home in non summer months my bill is typically $130-150. Inland summers can be brutal, with many days over 100, some over 110. AC is pretty much required even though I set it to 78 or 80. My summer bills range from $450-$600.

So averaged out summer is about $0.28/KWh winter about $0.20


SCE brags on their website that "About a quarter of our customers never exceed Tier 1" So that means they have set the baseline so low that 75% of their customers DO exceed it! Then they try to shame you by stating if you are in tier 3 you are "using a considerable amount of electricity". REALLY?? It only takes about 500KWh to get into Tier 3. In todays energy driven society that is not really that much. I own energy efficient HE washer/dryers, energy efficient refrigerator, energy efficient dishwasher that I never run the heat dry cycle on and every appliance possible is natural gas. ALL my lighting is either CFL or LED. My TV is LCD. But I also have 5 people (sometimes 6) living in my home with my wife being stay at home. I thing generally per capita we do pretty good, but AC when you need it uses a lot of energy no matter what way you look at it. So SCE is trying to shame everyone into living like they are back in the stone age using one light bulb, and thanking them for charging outrageous amounts of money for it. I really don't like SCE (for many reasons) but other SoCal providers are just about as bad. Really California has done it to ourselves and if my entire extended family did not live 2 hours or less away, I would have left the state years ago.

Three tiers. Lots of electric used because of pool, two houses on well & big garden with 10 tree fruit orchard and MH on shore power. Averages out to 11 cents/KWH.

Fifty plus years ago here, the power rate was so low they almost gave it away. Conservation was an unknown word.

Now it is 7.97 cents/KWH for first 1350 KWH and 11.95 cents/KWH after that, plus a 5% rate rider and tax. It's getting more and more expensive with each passing year. There was a 9% increase last year and the current rate is set to increase 28% over the next 5 years. We allegedly have one of the lowest rates in NA, but it sure doesn't feel like it.

That Mexican rate schedule is crazy. If I have the math right, at 350 KWH per 2 months, or 175/month, that's the equivalent of having a constant load of about 240 watts running continuously 24/7. That's sure not much.

I believe it's 15.5 cents per KwH here, plus, plus, plus...

Still, way cheaper than running a generator. For example, a 4 hour top charge costs about $2 in gas, and only $0.23 in actual hydro usage. Adding all the meter charges and such, I guess the total cost per KwH would depend on one's overall consumption.

In my travels with the US Navy, far and away the cheapest residential electric rate was Washington State in the 1970's. Lots of Hydro-Electric and lots of Nuclear. San Diego in the 1980s and Maryland now were the most expensive.

I suspect San Diego currently (See the pun?) is VERY expensive.

We have some of the highest electricity rates in the world here in New England.

I installed Solar with SolarCity two years ago. My electric bill last month was $3.73 and for the month before $5.19....I pay a $77 a month lease to SolarCity for the equipment. During the summer I amass credits with the utility to offset the winter months. Last year, all in, lease and electricity I paid a total of $399.00.....And I'm running a small machine shop with lathe, milling machine, blast cabinet and welders! Love my Solar!
