Electrician says Motor Homes want 220v

I had a 30 amp outlet installed at my garage for our 30 amp RV. My friend and electrician did a good job and used 110.

Now have a neighbor being told MHs' outlets should be 220v. States he's done it beofore for people. That's contrary to anything I've ever heard, but I could well be wrong.

So, 110 or 220 for neighbors outlet?

And for the sharp-eyed, I made a similar post on a different forum, not RV.Net.

  • we recently had an electrician wire up a 50-amp receptacle for us. I know these guys well and they've done lots of work for us over the years. I still printed out the correct wiring diagram and made sure the lead electrician had it and reviewed it with me. no issues.

ALL 50 amp RVs plug into a NEMA 14-50 that has 240 volts available.
Very common outlet for your electric oven at home.

Won't bother you with the details. BUT I had an electrician put a shore station at my house. TOLD the idiot it was NOT 220. Even supplied him with an RV outlet. He was to install it while I wad away at a sporting event.

    He STILL wired it 220.

Came back from a sporting event late in the night and plugged in to my new shore station minus my surge protector. Heck it was my house and I had it installed by a licensed electrician, right?

WRONG $3,000 to repair all that got fried.

Still makes me mad just thinking about it.:M

Hire an electrician, buy the RV outlet, AND print out this link and shove this in his face and stand there the whole time he is wiring it.
Print it out for you neighbor too!

all and everything you need to know about wiring an RV.

Here is a quote from this webpage:

It is imperative that the Electric Service used for RV’s are wired correctly. DO NOT TRUST anyone, yourself, friends, relatives or ANY Professional Electrician. ALWAYS check out all RV Electric Service BEFORE plugging in the first time.

The majority of the mistakes and the most damage to the RV’s are made with the incorrect installation of the 120-volt 30 amp Service. For some reason people including Electricians just DON’T GET IT when it comes to the 30-amp 120-volt Service. All you need to do is look at the online Forums where RV’s were damaged by incorrect installations.

Hope that helps answer your questions!!! :B:B

Not only that but have him sign a hold harmless and contract liability form so when the 'smoke' appear, he's liable for the replacement of any cooked appliances.

Never heard of any RV that had a 240 shore power plug.

Maybe a Prevost Tour bus but not an ordinary RV.
  • 30 amp RV 3 prong cord is NEMA TT-30R and 120 volt service.
50 amp RV 4 prong cord is NEMA 14-50R and 240/120 volt service.
  • 50 amp has 240 in the plug but the RV doesn't use 240, it uses two legs to 120 v appliances.

My son had a electrician wire a 30 amp RV plug at a hunt camp. He wired it 240 and luckily only blew the converter. He then came back and wired it 120 and reversed the polarity. The AC ran but was acting crazy when I found reversed polarity.
  • Many electricians have fried the electrical systems of many RV's over the years by wiring outlets the way they assume that they should be done, instead of the right way. It has happened to two different people I know locally by two different electricians.
  • Google '50 amp rv service' or someone will surely post a diagram we've seen many times.
