Elixir power converter alarm

My Elixir EL-25 power converter makes a squealing noise when plugged into 110 power. Initially the squeal is constant and then after a few minutes it becomes intermittent. I believe these are either low or short circuit alarms or both? I had my battery checked and it checked out good. I put a second one in and same thing happened. Also the converter does not charge the camper battery off the truck 12v system anymore. There is power to the 7way plug. Also the alarm goes off with the battery out.
Any suggestions?
  • Thanks for the advice. And suggestion on replacement. I was sure the truck 12v went through the converter.
It was a warranty replacement so was likely the cheapest possible.

You are experiencing a common issue with the Elixir converters. They are very poor quality and no longer made.

What you are hearing is a low voltage alarm. Your converter is dead or dying.

Time for replacement. I wager if you dismantle the converter you will find a broken circuit board, common failure due to poor construction.

The truck charge line may be routed through the converter, mine was, although it is not dependent on the converter function.

The WFCO 8725P is nearly a direct replacement for your Elixir. The WFCO is what I replaced my Elixir with.

Oops, meant to edit and I quoted instead. Using my iPad complicates posting.

Thanks. I've had the battery load tested and it's good. I will try and check the ground but it's a truck camper so the area is tight. Does not the truck 12v go through the converter to charge the battery?

    NO

Converter...takes 120V AC power and 'converts' it to 12V DC power.

Truck umbilical cord (7 pin) uses trucks 12V DC system to power trailer running/turn/brake lights AND charge line from alternator to trailer battery

  • Whenever the DC demand (load) exceeds the converter output you will get the alarm.....DC voltage at/below 12.5V.

The converter should be putting out at least 13.2 V DC with full load demand. DC output of 13.5---13.6V no load.

The converter will only charge your trailer battery when connected to 120V AC power source.......has nothing to do with truck 7 pin cord.
Truck alternator maintains charge on trailer battery when 7 pin cord is connected.

    You need to:
Have battery load tested....take to an auto parts store
Check that ground cable from battery to frame is clean/tight connection
    Check cable connections on converter...clean/tight
Check converter DC output when hooked up to 120V AC power source
