Erratic voltage reading on GPR-22 solar controller

I am getting ready to head south and was checking the charge rate on my Go Power solar regulator. It seems to be charging the batteries but when showing the voltage on the meter, it is jumping around from 10 volts to 13 volts. This happens even when the controller is not charging the batteries. I have checked the voltage at the batteries and they are at 12.7 volts. This is a new problem and did not do this in October when the trailer was parked. Everything else seems to be OK as it is keeping the batteries at full charge and a good charge rate when the sun is out. Any help is appreciated.

I learned from day one it is definitely a good idea of having a good manual and reliable way of viewing what goes in an out of your battery bank setup... It certainly kept me from going dark at 10PM at night which always seems to be my fail point hehe...

I built my BATTERY MONITOR PANEL from digital meters which monitors 12VDC at both BATTERY BANKS as well as what DC current is going into or being pulled out each battery bank. I can tell at a glance what my battery bank are doing.

  • There is NO substitute for having a battery monitor that tells you via a shunt what is going into and coming out of your battery volts and amps and knowing the SOC. Trimetric or Victron.
There is also no substitute for a VOM/multimeter and knowing how to use it to check connections and voltage along the way.
Looking at Go Power and their 'kits' it is clear they are clueless about voltage drop, using 10Ga wire and including 50' of it...
  • Try warming up the reg. I have the same Go Power reg., if the temp. drops below 35f the voltage and amps readout gets shows crazy numbers however it is still operating properly.
  • I would be checking for a loose wire between the battery and controller.

Loose connection at the fuse, or something else.

    GOod luck,

    Fred.
