The reason for "Battery Disconnects" manual or otherwise, is to avoid the spark that usually happens when connecting to the battery-terminal post. The spark can cause the battery to explode from any nearby gas vented. The person avoids have a battery explode in his/her face. Not a good situation.
The very reason ALL vehicle manuals advise you to make the second connection for the battery (grounded terminal) at a metal ground away from the battery. The person making the necessary connections for batteries has to be careful not to accidentally touch the wrong cable or grounded metal causing a short.
Having camped all my life, and now retired, I don't care to up the chances of exploding a battery, or frying equipment by shorting the 12v circuit. I have seen it happen to others.
Like others who know better and post often I have done some of the "No, no's" in the past and got by without any consequences. We get more careful in old age if not one of the people losing mental capacity.
