front axle seal leah on freightliner

I have a seal leak on oil lubed hub and am wondering how far I can drive to have it serviced if I were to top up the oil?

  • If it is just the outer cap seeping or leaking around the seal, you can carefully tighten up the screws that hold the sight "glass" in place and also the outer bolts can be tightened up if that gasket is leaking.
If it continues to leak then the gasket/cap can be replaced with new ones.

If the inner wheel seal leaks, as said before, you may have to take it to a shop to have it replaced.
I've installed and replaced the inner seals, but it requires special tools and lifting a heavy hub.

I disagree that keeping the oil level up is the only issue.

If oil is leaking, it is likely to be depositing on the brake shoes/pads.

An oil soaked shoe/pad on one side in front makes hard braking an easy way to loose control.

Cops look for streaks, oil or rust on wheels. Be sure to have them use genuine STEMCO seals and seal savers and apply the correct sealant to the axle spindle before driving the seal saver on with a driver. The correct lube is straight mineral oil like what is used in Fuller transmissions. Hope this helps.

Is it just me or is this a plug for stemco :h

  • As long as the oil doesn't run dry it could go on forever. Unless it gets so bad it gets on the tread or brakes.

    Good luck!
