gas detector

my 2001 cardinal came with this propane detector.
cci propane gas leak detector 7771.2
I did not see any lights on, and when I pulled it out, one wire was disconnected. I connected it, ant the green light came on. I do not see a test button. how do I know if it is good, or at 15yrs should I replace it.

  • thanks, IAMICHABOD

went to Home Depot to get one. it was on the shelf, when I went to pay, was told it was on recall and could not sell it to me.
  • I have a small Class C and it had one in the rear bedroom and one in the living area, I replaced both. In a larger vehicle like s 5R I would suggest having more than one.
  • Most only have a 5 year life.
What is needed is a dual chamber detector that will detect CO and smoke from a slow smoldering fire such as may start in a R/V because of electrical fires and fast burning smokeless fires.

After a lot of research and talking to Kidde, they assured me that this one would work in a home and also A RV,there is no difference.

    This is what I found.
    A Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-BA Nighthawk
That seemed to be best suited for this kind of application.

I suggest you read all the info and make your decision on this but I replaced the ones in my Class C with this one. They are rated for 10 years
and most are only rated for 5,If your RV is older than 5 years old and they haven't been changed they are most likely no good. Mine needed to be replaced so this was a good deal for me, I had a hard wired one and I chucked it for the battery powered ones, they can be checked before each trip by pushing the test button in the center of the unit.

Check those smoke detectors and replace them if needed, all have a date on them and how long they are good for. If they don't, toss them.

    I hope that this helps
  • mine showed in Red FEB 2000.
it had a 1 amp fuse.
also it must have gone out because the lead had been cut.
I want to replace all the sensors now. do they make battery operated.
    need propane, fire, carbon mono.
  • You might also check to see if your propane is now running - in the old days the CCI propane detectors controlled a solenoid device which controlled propane valve. As the CCI detectors went bad the solenoids remained shut denying owners use of propane .. some owners removed the solenoids others came up with alternative solutions.
  • The one you have is no longer available. The closest replacement is a bit smaller, so your going to have to do some work to fit in the existing hole.
  • Great advice from Old-Biscuit! When these detectors go bad, they will just start to beep whenever. About the only way to stop this, is to disconnect a wire. They cost about $100 dollars, so some just don't replace them. I think they are overpriced, but needed, could save your life.

  • They have a self life of 5-7 yrs. The sensors go dead. Should (May) be an expiration date on backside but at 15 yrs. TIME TO REPLACE

This one expiration date is in RED (NOV 2002)

You will not find a CCI replacement. Will need to goggle for other brands
