Generator break in procedure

Does anyone know if there is a correct procedure to break in a new generator? ie let it idle for so long then put it under a load for so long ?

  • I have three generators. two purchased new for camping and one larger unit for house backup. Broke-in the house gen years ago. The new ones have a break-in procedure in the owners manual (manual not in front of me to quote from) but basically to run the gen under a load of up to 75% for 5-6 hours then change the oil. Broke them in last year when purchased.
I used a couple small electric heaters for the load and varied the load.

Then I'd just let it idle for a minute or so before loading it up.

Owners manual just says to change oil after 10 hours. I know with some other small engines I have had, the dealer recommended a couple hours at low rpm and then ramp it up.

On other topic, I have noticed that just about all non-honda inverter generators have a 79 cc motor. Is the same manufacturer making all of the engines for these?

I know yamaha used to make engines for a couple of brands that were their 79.something cc engine.
  • My Champion 2000i manual says to run the gen for 5 hours at less than 50% load and change the amount of load to help the gen not get overly hot. After the first 5 hours., change the oil.
  • My B&S portable 2200w just says to change the first oil after 10 hours. (That is to get rid of initial wear metal shavings in the oil, then you are good till regular oil change time.)
