Generator Help

I have an Onan 5500 generator (model 5.5HGJAB-6755D) that cranks but won't start and need some troubleshooting help. I have done the following:

  • Replaced the carburetor and verified it's getting fuel
  • Replaced the plugs and verified I had a good spark
  • Replaced the fuel filter

I don't get an error code after cranking the engine.

  • My onan is 4 months old wouldn't start. had bad gas. drained old gas, replaced carb. also different issue I had a stuck exhaust valve, had onan fix it under warrenty thank god. Just don't go to Giant RV in California. they did a shotty job changing out my carb. left off gasket from air cleaner to carb and used silicone on top of a bad gasket on the head where they tried to adjust the rocker arm.

There could be the chance the Low Crank warning is still right. Are all the battery cable connections clean and tight? Is this genset in a coach? If so, try starting the genny with your road engine running. If it's in a trailer you could still try to assist those batteries with a start pack or jumper cables from your truck.
I'd just hate to see you tear into the genset when cranking voltage wasn't quite up to snuff.

The generator is in a toyhauler, so I'll try using my truck battery. I do have two 6V (GC2) batteries that are fully charged and less than a year old.

  • Here's your service manual . Fault 32 covers a lot of different problems. How hrs are on gen. I'll post the link in a minute.
  • OK, I cranked the engine until I got a fault code. The primary code is a 'service fault' (3 blinks) and the secondary code is 32 which is 'low cranking speed sense'. The pins on connector P1 look good and the batteries are fully charged. Now what??

Check your oil level and oil level sensor to make sure it is good.

And or look at jumping/bypassing the low oil circuit for a try.

Oil level is good. How would I bypass the low oil circuit?
