- rvtenExplorerIs this a gas or diesel Gen.?
- becworthExplorerSorry, guess we should have included what we're trying to fix. We have a 2007 Monaco Monarch 34ft, pulling a 2005 Saturn w/ a 5000 Onan GenSet. Also, my DH reminded me that we did stop for lunch and the genset stopped while we were parked. I had forgotten that. Thanks again for all the help.
- TEXASExplorerYou could get a better answer. If people knew what you had.
- raindoveExplorerWe had that problem. DH worked on the carbureator, replaced the fuel pump. Kept happening. Our culprit ended up being a pain -- back on top of the fuel tank, there was a piece of flexible hose between the fuel tank and the fuel line to the gen. That was rotted and had a hole in it.
Bottom line, about a piece of $3 or $4 hose and $300+ for labor. They had to drop the fuel tank to replace the piece of hose.
Could be a number of things. All you can do is keep eliminating possible problems. - becworthExplorerThanks for all the advice.
The gen would run about 5-10 minutes and shut off and then we'd have to wait about 5-10 minutes to get it started again. We did have plenty of gas, we already learned about the low fuel shut off before, the hard way also!! LOL!
We'll take all your suggestions and see what works. - Tom_BarbExplorer IIHow much fuel is in the tank? most generators won't run below 1/4 tank.
it is a stand pipe thingy, that will not allow you to run the tank dry while parked. - BobboExplorer IIIAlso, if the oil is not QUITE low, as you drive it may slosh away from the oil sensor making the generator think it is low on oil. Make sure the oil is full to the full line on the dip stick.
- PapPappyExplorerOne of the best ways to trouble shoot the fuel pump, is to use the prime switch (usually the on/off switch on the genset itself), to prime the pump. Let it run, until it stalls, and then immediately try to prime it again.
When priming, you can hear the pump running...and if it's got a problem, and trips off due to a safety feature, it will take a little while to cool off, and reset. If the safety has tripped, you won't be able to hear the pump running when you try to prime with it.
Could also be that the mechanic messed up, and there is a little piece of trash in the fuel line, which causes the fuel to cut-off.....then falls away, once the engine has shut-down, so it will start again, and run until that little piece of trash gets in the way and plugs the fuel line again.
Trouble shooting the fuel pump is something you can do. Only takes as long as it takes for the generator to stall. On mine, it was after about 10 minutes. Finding what is wrong in the fuel line is a bit more involved. You can try disconnecting the fuel line and blowing it out.
Wouldn't hurt to run some Sea Foam Fuel cleaner through the system either:) - rvtenExplorerHow long does it run. New fuel pump is about $80.0 plus labor. I replaced my own last week.

Does it shut-down when you are parked?
Does this only happen when you are driving?
Wondering if the fuel pump is acting up, or if there is a problem with the carburetor?
This is our first outing since service was done and have not tried the generator while parked. So we don't know the answer to that.
My question is - the generator fuel pump could cause this ? Is there any way of determining if this is the problem without a mechanic's $100 bill?
