Having the RV Temperature on the web??

Does anyone have a setup to monitor the temp in the 5er while you are away from it.

We travel with our pet and would like a way to have a temperature sensor so we can monitor it while we are out. I have wondered if you could use a MIFI (Verizon) or the AT&T Velocity and then use our iphones to monitor it.

Has anybody tried this or some other device?

Thanks
  • we travel with 4 small dogs. we normally don't leave them alone for long periods of time in the rv but do go out and sight see etc. i bought the marcell 500 unit back last summer. it monitors temp and humidity and has battery backup if power is cut. you set your limits, add cell phone numbers (for us its 2, my wife and i), and emails. if power is cut, limits are exceeded, we receive phone call, text, and emails within seconds. its operates on cell phone signal no internet needed. as long as you have a minimum cell signal good to go. the main situation i wanted to monitor is high temps in summer. camping in southeast in summer if shore power is lost or a/c malfunctions our TT would heat up like an oven pretty fast. there is a subscription fee but for us its well worth the piece of mind. it does work well we have tested several times.

As I approach self-imposed retirement (well DW imposed :)) at the end of this year I was looking for a useful project. I started out on breadboards and microprocessors many years ago before moving into mainframes. I'll need to work on my python skills though.

  • We bought a Lux Geo wireless thermostat and wired it in to our park model - it connects to any wireless. You could use a Mifi but I have no idea how much data it would use.

Thermostat is remotely controllable so we can turn up/down heat/AC.

    I like Gordon's idea too.

But if you're that worried, maybe turn on the AC to whatever temp your dog's comfortable at and leave it?

Easier way is an older phone with FaceTime set to auto answer pointed at a thermometer.
  • Someone here did a Raspberry Pi project that sends text messages when things happen. I forget if he had a temperature sensor. That project has me thinking about doing one too.

  • The upload speed and the amount of data are the challenges with cameras. I don't think the upload speed would be fast enough to use a Nest camera - plus Nest cameras are data hungry. There are some cameras that can be used with cellular data - but they're still pretty pricey - Google 'Arlo Go by NETGEAR'. We've used our iPhones and the Cloud Baby Monitor app. We point the iPhone camera at a thermometer hung on our RV wall. The Cloud Baby Monitor also allows you to monitor sound & motion. WardenCam is another similar app that we plan to check out.
  • There are WIFI enabled weather stations with temp, but that is probably overkill.
  • My house has a thermostat hooked to a wi-fi that I can control from my phone. Perhaps something similar for an RV. We don't worry about our dogs as we set the thermostat in the trailer to run the a/c while we're gone. If we're on the road we fire up the generator.
  • Nest cameras are good.. don't recall if they have temperature.
