I doubt the main circuit breaker either in your 5th or the house is a single. It may appear to look like that but it most likely has two power wires connected to it.
Your symptoms indicate a loose or miswired neutral. You will be able to measure 120v at the receptacle but when a device is plugged in, the load will unbalance the circuit and more current/voltage will be supplied.
Does the 50 amp receptacle in the house have a three wire or four wire topology? Many three wire 50 amp receptacles eliminate the neutral or tie it to ground. That can be a problem.
If you're hesitant about unplugging the cord and can't differentiate circuit breakers, I'd call an electrician.
