you need to backwash your tank from your drain
You mean by running water into it while the drain is closed? I tried that for just a few minutes using the built in sprayer, but I was nervous about doing it for too long since I figured it must be building a lot of pressure from the air in the tank.
Tank has a 1 1/2" vent line to roof
I like this idea, but I want to make sure that I do it correctly.
Is there any trick to backwashing it? I was just filling up the black tank using the sprayer while I held the toilet valve open. I would have expected to see some bubbling or something up into the toilet, but if the air was going up the vent line instead then that would explain the lack of bubbles.
Couple of other questions:
* How do I know when to stop running water into the tank. I guess it would be when stuff starts getting pushed back up into the toilet?
* Is there any danger of something floating up to the vent line and clogging it? I've dumped the tank a couple of times today but I know everything doesn't come out.

Friends of ours had the same problem. They said they had good results with one of these. Camco Swivel Stick Just feed it through like a power snake.

Thanks, I'll pick that up while I'm in town.
