Honda EU3000IS starter rope replacement - How to?

Although it's never been used, the starter rope on my generator broke. I found a lot of the info I need to disassemble the generator in the response that Robert@Honda posted on 7/12/13 in answer to the "Strange Generator Issue" post of 7/10/13. However, that info doesn't go quite far enough to show how to get the recoil starter out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I could ignore the issue, but as surely as I do, the next issue will be a dead battery just when I need to start the generator out in the middle of nowhere.

  • Try youtube.

I had my 2ks done at a John Deere place for $40 each. WELL worth it.
  • I forget if you can wind the cord on backwards. I remember a pull start lawnmower that had a separate little cord you put on the wheel and wound it up and then pulled. I pulled and pulled, no joy. Turned out I was winding it on backwards because left handed! :) Wound it on the other way around and pulled--started first time!

    FIXYA ON-LINE says:
    BROKEN PULL CORD EU3000i

"The only way to get to the starter on a EU3000IS is from the front of the machine .
You have to remove the plastic around the control panel , remove the control panel and the inverter and you be able to see the starter on the right side . To remove it is only 3 10mm bolts holding it in place . Make sure when you put it back is on the right place and pull the cord gently so the starter can sit .
    Hope this help"

There are alot of VIDEO's ON-LINE on how to repair things with the Honda Generators...

  • One time the handle came off the pull cord on ours (handle is on with a flimsy stopper) and the cord disappeared inside somewhere.

I had to take the Honda 3000 apart--lots of bolts etc- took a long time and got at the cord. Huge PITA. Got it all back together and now I tied the handle back on with a proper stopper knot (figure 8 knot) Been ok since.

Allow a day for the job and don't rush or you will lose track of what goes where for putting it back together. Won't take all day, but you don't want to have a deadline.
