Honda EU3000is vs. Yamaha EF3000iSEB

I am seeking actual knowledge in comparing the above mentioned generators as far as noise level, endurance and etc. How important is the boost feature on the Yamaha? I like the remote start feature available on each unit. Thank you for any input. Brian
  • I've had the EF3000iSE for 9 yrs and 4 mos. My BIL has had his boost model for about 6 yrs and a friend just bought the boost with remote start. I can run the AC and micro and other normal things but the water heater and fridge need to be on gas. I've only had my 5er for 18 mos and the auto setting on the fridge will sometimes trip me up with gen. The BIL doesn't seem to have a problem with the boost, but I'm not sure what all he has turned on either.

When I bought mine the deciding factor was that the Yamaha came with wheels and the dogbone adapter was included. I got it from Wise Equip in Shaumburg, IL. I wasn't expecting much from the little wheels but they do a great job. I load it onto a tray behind the 5er with a couple of ramps.

The only problem I've had was needing to replace the battery. It still started with the pull rope and ran fine. I've cleaned the plug and air filter a couple of times, and changed the oil after each use. The BIL left gas in his and had trouble starting it once.

After 9 yrs I sometimes think a Honda is a bit quieter but then I don't know old the ones I've heard are. I used mine for a week once during a power outage. I would run it for an hour twice a day here to keep the fridge and freezer cold. Then take it to the in-laws and run a fridge, freezer, water pump, furnace, TV and a light bulb. We only ran the water pump as needed along with switching the fridge and freezer in and out using extension cords. It was 7 long days.

You can still hold a conversation over mine in a normal voice but I still can't say anything against the Hondas. The BIL and friend bought a blue one because of mine but I don't always trust their judgement. I have threatened to steal the remote start, now that's nice.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one Brian. Good luck.
  • Had the Honda 3000. The remote only worked as long as the battery was good/charged, and then you may still have to go out and turn the switch on or choke it. Without the bells and whistles, it was very dependable and quiet.
  • I have a 3000 iSE. I would recommend getting the SEB model so you have 500 more watts to cover the locked rotor amps of an AC.

No experience with the Honda, other than having a friend of mine who swears by his 3000 watt model.
  • I have 2 EU2000's and my brother has the Yami 3000 w/boost. No experience with the Honda 3000, though. I can say that his Yami is not as loud as either of my EU2000's. However, at well over 150 pounds I can barely dead lift the Yamaha, let alone get it in or out of the back of a truck.

You asked about the remote start and the boost. Both are WELL worth the money IMO.
  • Bought my eu3000 in 2005 Runs 15k ac fine but won't run micro at same time. If has been 100% dependable and I never replaced the battery. I just pull start it. Starts very easy.

    No complaints.
  • Thank you for all the input. I am very satisfied with my present Honda 2000 and trying to decide whether to go with one of the 3000 units or add another 2000 for the rare occasion that I might run the AC. Most of our camping is in non modern camp grounds and the AC might feel good at times. Decisions-decisions.
  • A Honda 2000 is about a grand. A 3000 is about two grand. I'd buy a 2000 watt Companion (unless your other one has the 30A outlet), parallel cables, and call it done. 3500 watts from that will be decent for most things. You lose the remote start ability, but it is very easy to add an extended run gas tank for both generators to help with long boondocking trips.

To boot, if you need another 1500-1750 watts, Wise Sales sells a three eu2000i parallel kit.

The downside of the 3000 watt unit. My Yamaha is heavy. It stays in my truck bed and doesn't go anywhere. Two Hondas are a lot easier to deal with, especially if one just uses them on occasion. Unless remote start is critical, I go with another 2000 watt Honda, because you can carry just one or both with you.
  • I would agree. Another 1k for the Honda and you are done vs another couple grand for a 3k unit and you would have less than wattage than with the 2 2000s. My champion 2000s were purchased for their mobility. I have a Honda 8k in the garage to power the house during blackouts. I would not want anything heavier than the 2k units for taking on the road. The 3k Honda is rated at 2800 watts if I recall. I really considered the 3k Yamaha at one time and, while they are quality units, am glad I went with the 2 lighter 2ks.
