Honda generator bites the dust

My little Honda EU1000 up and died.
Started good - ran for ten minutes - quit and won't restart.
No big loads attached at the time.
Oil level good. Premium fuel used.

Genny is about 6 to 7 years old and probably less than 80 to 100 hours of use.

Attempt to troubleshoot includes removing covers, perform visual inspections. Nothing amiss there.
I disconnected the yellow wire (internet research says to "cut" yellow wire to the low oil pressure sensor) and tried starting.
No joy.

Any ideas, experiences along those lines that might get it running again?
  • If you can't get it figured out, a lawn mower repair shop in a larger city like Reno should be able to get it up and running, especially if they service Honda Lawnmowers.
  • Yes, I checked the fuel cap. The "On" switch. The choke.
We're traveling, about 100 miles outside of Ely, Nevada and I will stop there for some starter fluid.
The spark plug cap looks like it might need a special tool to get it off.
Time and weather permitting, I have a go at it again this PM.
  • I had a similar problem with my 2000. One day it ran fine, the next day it wouldn't start no matter how many times I pulled the cord. I removed the spark plug and blocked the hole with my thumb and then pulled on the cord. No compression whatsoever. The problem turned out to be the intake valve was stuck in the open position. I managed to get the valve unstuck and have had no problems since.
  • Hundred hours on that gen is just broken in!

I'm not one to throw part at a problem, but in this case I'd start with a new plug. I've had more than a few Honda problems with just a bad plug.

This is what the 2KW Honda FUEL CAP VENT looks like. ON is for venting air - OFF is for closing the vent.

  • Probley not dead, just resting. I second the gas cap vent but always go for the easy stuff first. Let us know
  • Try a shot of starting fluid. If it fires, then it's a fuel problem. If it doesn't fire, most likely an electrical problem.
