Hot water heater making noise

Our suburban Hot water heater in our 2007 TK3 Mobile suites just started making a noise when we run the hot water. I susoect this a faulty check valve. Has anyone changed this or have any experience with these beasties? Some say to live with noise, some say to drill out the valve for full flow and put in an inline valve and of course there is the repacement option. Any input out there? Thanks

  • Check valve inside nipple on HOT out....cheap plastic JUNK
As Doug pointed out....replace with BRASS

BUT ----I prefer shutoff valves vs any check valves.
One on each...cold/Bypass/Hot and NO check valves

IF noise is 'hissing' then scale/crud on electric heat element.
Vinegar or CLR soak and then really good flush/rinse
    OR just replace element
  • If you figure out it is the check valve, replace with a BRASS check valve. They have larger orifices than the Plastic check valves and will allow more volume of water and minimize the water noises. The brass has the same size 1/2 inch threads. Doug

Noise? What sort of noise. Water hammer, hissing, what?

I agree. No description of what noise we're talking about makes an intelligent suggestion impossible.

Wild guesses, now, those are easy and a dime a dozen. So I'll hazard one. Note that this applies ONLY to the cases where the water heater is making a loud roaring noise which is often accompanied by excessive smoke. It is very common for spiders, stink bugs, mud daubers, and similar insects and bugs to get into and clog up the burner tube. When this happens, the solution is simple: clean out the burner tube.
