Hot Water tank not working on AC

[img][/img]I have an Atwood 6 gallon propane/electric HW tank that will not run on electricity. I checked the breaker, tried the off-on switch and still can't get it to work. There is a panel in the outside access that says "push to reset" but it does not feel like it does anything. I have a multi-meter but i'm not sure what or where to test for power. Help please.

  • Spec sheet says Atwood. I only have a partial shot of the electrical area.

Never had any luck posting a picture on this site even after reading the how to many times.

Mine looks more like the top unit but is a little different. What I have not figured out yet is where the element is so I can check the power.
  • Which water heater do you have???

    This one..........

    OR this one........

'Push to Reset' is for the high temp t-stat (the t-stat sets are under that cover)

The t-stat for electric element could be bad, the electric element could be bad, the power to element could be bad.

I don't think you have an Atwood......I think you have a Suburban water heater.

ID from picture which one you have for better help and understanding of your problem.
  • Had the same problem a couple of weeks ago with my 10 gal Atwood. Mine was the relay. Use your meter to see if you are getting 120VAC to the heating element, if so then your element is gone. If not see if you are getting 12VDC to the relay near the element, if so then you have a bad relay. :)

Have you ever turned on the electric element when the tank was empty? It takes just a second or two to fry the element if you did.

Just had the camper for a short time and don't remember turning it on without water but it's possible. I need to check for power at the connections for the element but I'm not sure where they are. Under the plastic square marked "press to reset" ?
  • I had the exact same problem on my last trip in Mexico.
Turns out one of the screws at the element was loose and the wire simply fell off...Thankfully is didnt short anything.

Pain in the butt to get to and hook back up (under this little cover) but worked as soon as it was hooked up.

  • Has it ever worked on A/C?
Has it ever been turned on in the A/C mode without water in it?
