how to remove electrical outlet in Kodiak TT?

I have to replace some carpet, so need to remove the outlet boxes that are R/L of the bed in my 24 ft Kodiak trailer. I've got the outlets out, hanging by their wires, and the white plastic clip off the back so I can see inside the outlet ... what the heck!!! ... the wires run down from top to bottom and are pressed into clips that cut through the insulation inside little pockets. Never seen this before! How do you get the wires out of the outlet?

  • Hi,

Of course outlet boxes are needed. But in my case a junction box was not.
  • When installing home type outlet. Hope you are also installing an outlet box.
Fire protection. The RV one is all in one.
  • Another vote for hate- though they are hard to replace in some cases due to the shallow aspect. They are a reason I do *not* recommend electric heaters in RVs unless a good, high quality outlet is installed.
I recently had a rig with no power in the front- the problem was the outlet that still had power that was used to splice a line in.
  • Hi Roy,

No, they are only a HATE item for me. I do not believe they are safe for high wattage use. I did not have to add junction boxes.

I replace one whenever I can using the standard receptacle from LOWES. I do not trust them at all. Since they are pushed into a knife connection they will put a crease on the bare wire and the first time you move the wire it may break off.

However these RV type are handy to use where behind wall space is needed...

The other part that comes up if you want to replace one with a standard house type receptacle you will find the ROMEX will not be long enough to pull out so you end having to install a juntion in another electrical box close-by using twist on wire nuts.

  • Hi,

Pull hard. I replaced all but four outlets in my RV as I use a lot of high wattage devices.
  • some household ones of that type have a slot you can stick a nail or something in to spread the clamping action.
    bumpy
  • That is a standard RV outlet.been a while they I messed with one.
    Make sure power is off.
Think wires just pulled back out.might need a screw driver to release dome tension on clip.
