Hyundai 2000si Spark Plug Question UPDATE

Update 18 Nov--(forgot to update this earlier)

Recently got a 1991 RV and the previous owner left a Hyundai 2000si portable gen in it. Have not got the gen going yet. It needs a new primer bulb which I have ordered. (bulb is split and squirts gas when pushed and leaks gas too)

Meanwhile, I see that the spark plug has the ignition coil stuck on the top ( called a "terminal" I see from Google) with the little screw-on thingy (don't know the name of that) missing. The ignition coil won't fit when a thingy is screwed on the terminal--I tried that using a thingy from another plug.

So the question is whether this is how it is supposed to be? Just the bare threaded thin terminal with no thingy? I have also asked Hyundai Support, but won't likely get a reply for a few days.

Thanks

  • Very interesting! Specs and reviews here:

Quite a range of prices for the various items here. I see the Hyundai new is $677, so the repair guy was right to say at $500 for repairs I should get a new one. The Firman has better reviews and is less noisy per specs.

  • Check out the Firman 3300/3000w at Costco.ca. $750 Cdn, 58 dB, 95 lbs, inverter style. They also sell a 2100/1700w unit for $640 Cdn.
  • Thanks for the tip on the gen. I will first try to work a way to use my Honda 3000, but if that doesn't work out I will have to go another route. Eg another ad here has a used pair of Kipor 2000s with parallel kit going for $2000 (Can= 0.78 US) that would have lots of VA and be able to fit in the Class C (height is the problem), each 2000 being smaller than the 3000. We'll see how it all goes. No hurry this time of year! :(
  • For $389 you can get a refurbished Champion 2000w inverter from Supergen Products.
A brand new one is around $600. They are only rated for 1700w running though.
    I would consider that anyways.
  • Update is that the spark plug cap is small inside so you do take the top off the spark plug terminal.

I got the new primer bulb ok, and got the gen running, but no 120v output. Turns out it needs a new inverter, which is listed at $377 plus shipping. (I got this gen for free with the Class C recently)

Local Hyundai certified repair guy says an hour and a half or so to put in a new inverter so somewhere around $500 and a bit for a working used Hyundai 2000si, if I want to. Repair guy says might as well buy a new one. Local used ad today for a Honda 2000 for $1,000 for comparison.

I like that the Hyundai 2000 is rated for 2000 but the Honda is 1600, which is perhaps not enough for my 100 amp charger. The Hyundai is probably louder.

My Honda 3000 works great, but it won't quite fit in the Class C. It used to ride in the back of the truck with the 5er. I still have the smoke- making, loud 2- stroke 900w gen that I got last winter, but have not used while camping yet (if ever).

I can get the 3000 in the Class C if I take the bottom rails off the gen. I could then pull it out onto a same height dolly beside the MH to run the gen and then slide the gen back in. I can find a place for the dolly ok. Unfortunately this big side compartment is in the long overhang behind the back wheels, so weight is an issue.

I will figure something out, but that's the update on the Hyundai. I did get great help from the guys at their tech support unit back east.
  • Well that is good news that at least some plugs don't use the thingy in all applications. Perhaps that is why it is screwed on, so it can be removed.

The inside of the ignition coil that goes on top of the plug has a small brass looking tube in the middle that is too small for the usual bulby thingy and it is not threaded inside. (The thingy was not jammed in there as I first suspected.) OTOH I can't tell if it makes good contact with the terminal.

I hope Hyundai can clarify all that for me.

I have the manual for it. The specs for this thing say 65 at 7 metres, so that should be fun to listen to if I ever get it going! It is enclosed, so I don't know why it has such a loud spec. We'll see. (Anybody have one or heard one in real life?)

It says the overload will pop at 100W over spec. Its rated output power is 2.2 Kw. No mention of VA. OTOH, their 1000i (not too clear on Si vs i ) is rated 0.9 Kw. Confusing. We'll just have to see how it works--if ever :)

    Thanks, guys.
  • The little screw-on thingy you're referring to is, I assume, the metal bulb-shaped connector typically on spark plugs?

I have seen engines where they were not used. It sounds to me like your generator is probably one of them, as I can't think of any reason why an owner would go to the effort of installing a spark plug without one unless it were superfluous and your observations seem to confirm that this is the proper configuration.
  • here is the manual page 29 shows recommended spark plugs get a new one. User Manual if you look where the spark plug fits into the coil you should be able to tell what size terminal it needs to plug in to it. you may need a good light to see it.
