Ice Maker Not Making Ice

Any ideas on what to do with a Dometic icemaker not producing ice
This is inside the refrigerator not a separate ice maker.
New refrigerator and operated about 3 trips and now does not fill with water
Can it be repaired or does it need to be replaced as a unit.

  • 1. The FIRST thing you do since it dumped 3 times is to verify the Freezer temp with a digital thermometer. The freezer temp MUST/HAS to be below 10 degrees before it will harvest and allow water to enter. If not below 10 degrees, THAT is your problem, find out why the freezer does not get below 10 degrees
    2. IF at 10 or lower, then verify that the water solenoid valve has water to it, take the feed line loose and see if water squirts out. If so, then apply 120 to the solenois AT the solenoid spade terminals and verify the solenoid lets water thru.
    3. If it does then reconnect and still apply 120 power to the solenoid and see if water then fills up the icemaker mold. If so and the refer is below 10 degrees the icemaker probably needs replaced. There are no serviceable parts on the icemaker assbly in the freezer.Doug

There are many reasons an ICE maker may fail to make ice.. Depending on options on the RV in the first case:

1: The ice maker is a 120 volt device.. SOME RV's have two outlets in the fridge's outside compartment, one for SHORE power one for INVERTER power, the ice maker is supposed to be plugged into the latter,, Since my RV did not come with an inverter (I added it later) I do not have that. Thus no shore power no ice maker.

Second, it needs water.. In my case the shut off valve is in that same compartment (Frige, outside) on the other side of the compartment.

Next. there is the bail on the ice maker, DOWN is on, UP is either off, or cycling.

Next we have the temps inside the freezer. I think it is 29 degrees, above that no ice maker operation.

Next we have TIME. takes quite a bit of time, it has to get down to 29 before it cycles

Next we have water pressure, too little and you wont have an ice crescent big enough to push out.

The adjustment may be off (Yes there is an adjustment)
A plug could be "not properly connected"

    The solenoid could be bad

The line from the solenoid to the ice tray split and leaking (You said brand new though so I doubt that)

you must have pressure in the water line.

IF it worked, and does not, ICE can build up on the water "Chute" and clog it so that no water can flow. (DEFROSTING helps here).

And finally.. Dang thing could be defective. Or improperly installed.
  • Ditto on having to PRIME mine sometimes. I use a turkey baster. I think the warm water causes it to move into the proper cycle.

I often have to prime my ice maker to get it to start making ice. Feel in the mold if there is any water in there. If not I add water and then mine will start working. If this is after tenderizing is the valve turned off outside the back of the unit?
  • I'm not sure of the correct procedure for starting the ice maker for the Dometic freezer. If I turn on the refrigerator/freezer before we leave (shore power) and turn on the water pump, the ice cubes melt into the warm ice cube bin and forms a solid mass at the bottom, before individual cubes are able to form when the freezer is cold enough. If I don't turn on the water pump until the freezer is cold, it seems that the water inlet freezes, and does not allow water to enter the ice maker and no cubes are formed. It eventually resolves itself, but I'm not sure of the best procedure?

    Amy thoughts?
  • Hi,

Is it parked at home or in a campground? Plugged into shore power and has water at 35 - 55 PSI on all the time?

The ice maker needs to be below 5F to start the process, then reach 0 or so to consider that the ice is frozen. Then it will start the harvest process, starting a 300 watt heater, at the same time start a harvest motor, that will turn until the ice is free of the ice maker. Once the harvest arms have brushed past the bottom, get to the top, this will close a microswitch and power a water solinoid for a couple of seconds. If water pressure is present, then it will fill with water again. Then the motor stops, microswitch will shut off the water fill valve, and the ice "Full" arm will lower again. If the ice full arm contacts with solid ice, it will stop production and not harvest until it has fallen down most of the way. Otherwise it will wait until the thermostat is below 5F and then it will detect that the ice in the maker is frozen, starting the harvest again.

The ice maker kits can be replaced. But before replacing the kit, make sure that the freezer is cold enough and that there is water present.

    Fred.
