Installing an inverter on truck to power compressor

I'm putting airbags on my TV and have decided that instead of getting the on board air option I would instead install an inverter and a stand-alone 2-3 gal air compressor. That would also give me 120v to charge lap tops and other electronic devices for the kids when we travel.

I would just mount the compressor in a box in the back of the bed.

Anyone ever do this?

  • Why does the compressor need to run on AC?

Just get a DC compressor like everyone else, then get a little inverter to power your electronic gadgets.

You'll be money ahead versus getting an inverter with enough juice to power an AC compressor .01% of the time, and will power electronic gadgets 99.99% of the time.
  • I used a 12v compressor from an old Buick load leveler system.
  • Kind of a King Kong system for little air bags and a lap top.

MV-50 (amazon) and a 100w inverter for the toys would be my choice.
  • i filled airbags on our previous MH using a 12v compressor

    around 40~50# iirc

very little 'air' in air bags
  • The inverter is a good idea....and the compressor is a good idea, but not sure if one is good with the other:H
Went looking at compressors...figured you'd probably want the 150 psi unit. Found this one by Dewalt

    It's got an 8Amp motor.
That may be a pretty stiff draw on the batteries?

With the airbags, you really don't need to fill them on the fly, so you could run the genset, or stop by a gas station. Heck, because they are so small, you could actually pump them up by hand:)
Still, it's nice to have a compressor with you....for tires, kid's toys, etc.
  • If you can get an engine driven compressor I think you will be way better off.. The inrush on a compressor is akin to an AC unit, and it could likely take a 3000w inverter to bull it off. Then there is the battery and alternator....
