Interior space heating improvements

We are looking at a couple options for additional space heating appliances. Some criteria:

- quiet!

- approved for space heating in rv use.

- low or no electricity requirement to operate

- radiant heat design. Did I mention quiet?

- use on board propane supply preferred. Diesel fired would be considered.

- no ecm's, ecu's, boards, remote controls, circuits, displays to fail.

We have looked at some websites and welcome input from people experienced with these products and suggestions about others:

Platinum Cat heaters

Dickinson Marine heaters

Thanks

I'm fooling around with a version of Roy Ken's hydronic thing. Google such terms as 'water cooled PC'. I'm wanting it mostly for 'background heat' so the noisy furnace doesn't wake me up so often. The Tiger's small, about the same volume as a truck camper. A quiet, low-amp pump, a computer fan, a radiator, and my existing water heater may be the answer.

I've got an email in mow to one of the outfits to determine what change in water temperature I can expect from inlet to outlet on the radiator. And yes, I've considered the Propex as a replacement for the Suburban 16000 Btu howler. I may do it yet.

Hi Handbasket - yes the rad mfg should be able to tell you the btu/hr you can expect based on inlet water supply temp and flow and fan cfm. I do have room for a couple of these...time to get the ciphers out
  • Hi,

    WRONG.

    Plus moisture build up.

Wave Catalytic Heaters. No carbon monoxide to deal with.
  • Wave Catalytic Heaters. I use one in my 5r and it works great. No carbon monoxide to deal with. No smell. No noise. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for use in an RV. 3 models to choose from ranging in BTU output of 1600 BTU's to 8000 BTU's. We have the middle model (Wave-6) and it kept us warm at night in outside temps of 17 degrees F. using the middle heat setting.

  • Hi Roy Ken - for ac - electric shore power spots we are looking at oil filled heaters and also pianotuna's "Magic Carpets".

The hydronic system off the water heater looks interesting. Our S&B house and buildings are hydronic radiant floor heat with a remote heating plant so the only noise inside the house is 3 circulator pumps in a room in the basement - therein lies our aversion to forced air fan racket and draftiness in the rv :)

Hi Chris Bryant - A Dickinson diesel unit is a quiet 16,500 btu/hr - we almost have a spot for one...

My pick would be the Platinum Cat but would most definitely look into venting outisde to help remove dangerous fumes.

I really like this idea as seen on Google Search...

In my smaller trailer I have really been wanting to replace the loud propane furnace which produces way too much heat for us with one of these HYDRONIC Water heater type registers.

    This concept -

Heat registers can be mounted most anywhere you can run PEX hoses.

They also make all kinds of base board type registers as well

We supplement our trailer heat with OIL-FILLED ELECTRIC HEATERs and these are very safe to use in the trailers. No visible flames-burnt heat heat smell-no noise except maybe a click.

We found this low profile model on AMAZON - We also use one of these O2COOL 10-inch fans that runs from 120VAC XFMR, DC Plug, or internal D-CELLS... Perfect for sitting behind the low profile oil-filled heater to move some heates air around the trailer.

One guy on here has installed electric heated floor panels
    Lots of choices....

  • There are some "through the wall" vented heaters that will operate without power--but work better with power to their fan.

There are several RV folks who use the Platinum Cat.
  • The only one that you have links for that meets you requirements are the Dickinson models- though I cannot find ratings for RV use, marine use is usually stricter :)

While not meeting many of your req's, you might look at Propex heaters- small, low current draw, but they are forced air, and they do use electronics.
  • Move further south and use the sun will be the cheapest and quietest.
